->> Policy matters little when you're faced with someone making $10/hr and the authority to detain you indefinitely.
As we've seen countless times with subways, banks, chemical plants and even police officers at crime scenes, what is buried in a policy manual rarely prevents hassle. It gives you leverage after the fact, and can help when arranging to do something in advance. But in the street, in the moment, it's basically useless.
If next week you whip out your 70-200 in the middle of the airport and start shooting the checkpoint, you WILL experience a rather uncomfortable flight delay...and probably end up on the super-secret-nobody-ever-is-removed-always-screen-this-guy list. If you want those shots, it's best to arrange something in advance, even though legally you might not need permission. |

Considering the number of photographers who have had problems dealing with the TSA and Airport Police while photographing in, near, around, TSA security check points an official policy announcement is something that is favourable for news photographers.
While you tend to stick with sports and non-news images, for those who handle news stories and cover security issues this information is important to have.
Being able to point to an official policy statemment while photographing a story and dealing with TSA TSOs and airport police makes doing the job easier. |
