Studio back drops
Jesse Beals, Photographer

->> Ok, been doing photo journalism for 10 years. Got laid off like pretty much everybody else in the newspaper industry, so I am making the switch to portriat photography.

That being said, I dumped most of my money into lights, stands, power packs and printers.

So were do you guys get back drops cheap? Has anybody made back drops and if so how did you go about it? Any ideas online or fabric store wise? I looked on EBAY and they run between $50-150.00 a back drop. I would lke to get 10x20 size. There has to be a cheaper route.

Any help would be great.

Thanks,

jes

I've gotten a few backdrops online from www.amvona.com, although for the size you want the prices are similar to the range you mentioned you had seen on ebay.

->> I have two Amvona backdrops. Email me if you're interested in checking one of them out. I'd like to move it. I dont' have much use for the orange/purple one that resembles the palette of a sunset. The one I like best so far is a grey one that has some blue accents. They used to sell a lot of them on eBay you just have to be good at auction sniping.

->> I've tried making my own twice. Just isn't worth it. The time materials and overall poor quality when compared to a commercial unit, just plain push this out of the DIY arena (IMO). Trying to dye a 10x12 or even worse 10x24 foot hunk of muslin while maintaining the temps needed to set the dye are almost impossible. Rinsing the backdrop after it is dyed is an exercise in turning a person into a Easter egg.

I tried this using both the washing machine method and a second time outdoors in a metal tub set on heating elements. I wish I had taken a picture of 24 feet of muslin hanging in my backyard while being rinsed with a hose and hanging to dry.

Spend the coin, trust me.

->> Eric, I actually chuckled out loud thinking of the sight that must have been of you trying to dye a 24-foot muslin in the backyard. I have a feeling if I tried to do something like that, I would end being multi-colored and using a number of my favorite swear words.

Jesse, I've purchased a few backdrops from Amvona and have been very happy with them.

->> John it's funny NOW, it wasn't so funny then :)... From the elbows down I had splotches of dye where it had splashed above the gloves, and my legs where the apron didn't protect me. Never AGAIN!!!

There's a place in Boston where they hand paint backdrops. See the setup just once and you'll know that anything larger than a bed sheet isn't a DIY thing.

->> Hey Jesse,

If you can use a smaller backdrop, use curtains. You can find them all over and usually fairly cheap.

The all have slots for the rod already.

Just my $.02 worth.

Take care, Larz
