->> I saw that Vincent LaForet and others had pulled still photos from videos made with the 5D Mark2. Anyone out there have experience with this? What would be the best method to do this to preserve quality? Thanks for your help...

->> Dave,

I've done this quite a bit for my paper. I was previously using a Canon XH-A1 and let me tell you that the 5D Mark II is a better file by far. It's really not fair to even compare them.

The technique I use for getting the frame grab from MkII footage is the same as I was using for the XH-A1. I use FCP. I find the frame I want, hit Shift-N and Export using Quicktime Conversion. Change the drop-down to 'still image' and change the option to jpg instead of png. That will give you about a 6mb file uncompressed (1920 x 1080 pixels).

->> For an easier time frame grabbing, with a better result, download (free) a program called MPEG Streamclip from www.squared5.com (Mac or Windows versions available).

It's a great video conversion program that will also do an excellent frame grab.

with iMovie 08 (same in 09). just right click on the frame you want, choose create freeze frame, then click again and choose "show in finder"

1920x1080 jpg. 350k compressed, 6MB opened in photoshop.

->> Jim,

Have you used FCP or iMovie to get frame grabs from the 5dMkII? I'm curious to know what's better about MPEG Streamclip. Image quality? Grain? Color? I don't think the image size could be different without some interpolation.

I can certainly imagine that for those who don't use or have FCP or iMovie that it could be a good move, especially if it can do other conversions for you. But for those of us using FCP or iMovie, is there a good reason for us to check out MPEG Streamclip for frame grabs?

No, but in doing frame grabs from a number of different video formats I've found that MPEG Streamclip kicks the proverbial ass...

It's easy. It works very well. It's free.

"But for those of us using FCP or iMovie, is there a good reason for us to check out MPEG Streamclip for frame grabs?"

Hard to say. Ease of use? Quality of result? Mac/Windows availability?

If you have a problem with downloading a free program that works well in order to try it out, a program that might work better than what you have been used to, then so be it. For anyone else? Go nuts.

I could see how you could. I see it as crazy exciting as I imagine once Nikon makes something equivalent to the 5DMkII (or better, hopefully), I can see myself shooting a lot of video for The Website and pulling the stills for the paper.

->> Joshua,

First, that was a beautiful thing you did for your brothers. Just a sweet, sweet thing to do for them.
I just wanted to tell you that before I asked the boring stuff.

The boring stuff. What kind of ISO/Gain did you use for that footage, particularly the inside scenes? Here's where my video ignorance shines through....what was the frame rate you used?
