What Media CEOs Earned in a Year of Layoffs
In 2008, media chain Gannett laid off thousands of workers and its stock price fell 76 percent—and CEO Craig A. Dubow earned a $875,000 bonus. At E.W. Scripps Company, CEO Richard A. Boehne—who recently announced the closure of the Rocky Mountain News—earned $268,091 in incentive pay while overseeing hundreds of layoffs. |

->> The BONUSES paid to two NYT executives could have kept 29 people working for a whole year at a $40k salary. There is no amount of justification these corporations can give that makes their executive compensation packages anything other than disgraceful.
I'm glad for them, though. I mean they are able to convince themselves and their corporations' stockholder boards that divvying up millions between a privileged few despite free-falling circulation numbers, declining ad revenue and newspapers at or near the brink of bankruptcy is acceptable.
Too bad they're not car salesmen because GM could sure use that kind of smooth-talking talent in its dealerships right now. But then again, GM is getting a governmental boost while cutting and slashing thousands of jobs so they can return to profitability - not help keep the economy going by keeping people working as the bailout was supposedly intended to do.
At the very least some of the media corporations froze executive bonuses. That's relieving, but I'm not sure how those folks will make it on a couple of million a year.
Times are tough for everyone, I guess. |
