Nonprofit Newspaper - Your opinions?

U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD) has introduced a bill to allow newspapers to become nonprofit organizations, like public broadcasters. While it is obvious that large news organizations, such as the NYT or the WashPost, would not be able to take advantage of nonprofit status without significant changes to their business model, it may be just the thing that is required to keep local/community newspapers publishing.

For instance, it could have saved the Rocky Mountain news ... maybe?

Anyway, what do you, especially those who work for newspapers, think?

How important is it for a newspaper to endorse political candidates (nonprofits are not allowed to endorse candidates)?

Would it be useful for ad and subscription revenue to be tax-free?

Would you donate money to a newspaper (esp if you get a tax deduction)?

I am interested to hear what you have to say about this proposal ... should this be something that the newspaper community gets behind and supports with its influence?

The problem is that they're already non-profit organizations.

Cardin means not-for-profit organizations.

If you are losing money, you are not paying taxes anyway.

My belief is that the idea could work but since many papers are still profitable and the for-profit corporations that own them are not interested in the public service of journalism they're not going to sacrifice their profits.
