Cardin (D-MD) has introduced a bill to allow newspapers to become nonprofit organizations, like public broadcasters. While it is obvious that large news organizations, such as the NYT or the WashPost, would not be able to take advantage of nonprofit status without significant changes to their business model, it may be just the thing that is required to keep local/community newspapers publishing. For instance, it could have saved the Rocky Mountain news ... maybe? Anyway, what do you, especially those who work for newspapers, think? How important is it for a newspaper to endorse political candidates (nonprofits are not allowed to endorse candidates)? Would it be useful for ad and subscription revenue to be tax-free? Would you donate money to a newspaper (esp if you get a tax deduction)?
