Headed to the Hill

->> A reporter friend and I are headed to Capitol Hill to follow a freshman congressman for the day. I am planning on producing some multimedia (Soundslides) of our visit.
A) I have never been to the Capitol before so any tips on security, etiquette, and any general tips would be appreciated.
B) The plan right now is that I will wire up our congressman with a wireless lav mic and have the Zoom in my camera bag. I think this will allow me to juggle the camera and audio nicely. Does this sound better than just using the mic on the H4?
Any thoughts would be appreciated. |

->> Matthew:
Security is much like airport security (x-rays of bags, metal detectors). You might have to unwire and re-wire the Congressman every time he/she goes into a building due to the metal detectors, but I'm not sure how sensitive they are. I suspect visible wires/other units will cause some angst among the security staff even if they don't trip the detectors. In my experience, the staff is always very courteous.
Be ready to do a lot of walking, depending on where the Congressman goes. It's some distance from the Capitol to the bottom of the hill, where the Rayburn Building sits.
I've never had anyone look at me funny for walking along the hallways with photo gear, but I did have a Congressman mistake me for a contractor and tell me to go get the boxes out of his car. When I told him I was there to shoot photos of him with a delegation of his constituents, his tone changed considerably.
Other tips:
The lunchrooms on the bottom floors have good food at reasonable prices.
Don't even think about trying to park anywhere close to the Hill. Take the Metro -- cheap, safe and clean. |

->> Matthew,
Check in with the Press Photographers' Gallery in the Capitol building in S-317 first thing.
You should have little trouble since you will be with a congressman but there are limits on where you can go and shoot -- especially video.
The Gallery can spell out the rules for you and give you a daily press pass to keep the police hassle in the hallways down a little |

| ->> The metal detectors in the Senate office buildings are CRAZY sensitive....I was almost forced to strip down after going through it four times....this was threatened and several bystanders asked NOT to be subjected to seeing me naked. The culprit? One, ONE friggin memory card in my pocket.....so when they say take EVERYTHING out of your pockets...JUST DO IT! |
