Nikon 105 VR and 70-200 VR?

->> Anyone own and use both of these and if so, what do you like especially about the 105 VR?
I have the 70-200 and needing to get a longer prime for tighter portraits, but it seems like a slightly redundant combo.
I wish Nikon had a 105 or 135 f/2 or f.18...
Thanks a bunch.

->> I have both.
The 105 isn't as fast to focus, but it is a nice alternative for portraits and detail shots. |

| ->> The 105 Micro is a stunningly sharp lens. I have the older AF model and can't say enough good things about it. Much cheaper used now that the larger VR model is out. Unless you need VR get the old one. |

| ->> I have the 105VR and would recommend it. A few years ago I owned the non-VR 105 and I'd agree with Jonathan - the older one is just as good. |

->> Nikon does make two older D lenses in the 105 and 135 range, both f2 I think, one having defocus control which while subtle, can be a great tool for portraits.
The 105 VR while certainly very sharp isn't a cheap lens and unless you think you'd get the macro (micro as Nikon calls it) I don't think its very good bang for the buck.
I'd put my money towards the excellent 85 1.4 or 135 f2 |

->> Nic, the combo isn't redundant at all. I have both but the 105 is super sharp, but slow to focus. The Macro element of the lens makes it stand out.
The 70-200 makes for a great complement to a wide. If you can GET BOTH. Yamil is selling his 105mm on the classifieds. |

| ->> I'd second the 85 1.4, or even the 85 1.8. |

->> Nic,
I have both and I'm selling my 105 to buy a 85 PC, but I really like the 105!!
But for Table Tops, the 85 PC is it for me!!

| ->> I have both and use the 105VR for portraits all the time. I also use it for products so it is a good deal for me. I have the 85 1.8 and the 105 is sharper. Great lens! Still looking for a used 85 1.4 but they are hard to find. |
