->> Apple announced today that the iPhone OS will get a significant update this summer.

While I'm excited to finally have cut and paste, push notifications and turn-by-turn GPS, I was most intrigued by the new subscriptions feature within third-party apps. It looks like this could bring the iTunes sales model to newspapers and magazines by charging readers small fees to view content within their apps.
There has already been discussion of the iTunes model in regards to newspapers on this site and elsewhere. It looks like Apple has jumped on the idea. Could it be the answer? More importantly, will it save existing newspapers? What do you think? |

->> It also allows Apps to interface with outside devices either through bluetooth or plugged in to the dock connector.
How cool would it be to have a CF card reader plugged into the iPhone with a version of PhotoMechanic that would allow you to view images, caption and send them all from the phone. That would be great for spot news and those times when editors want something right then. |

| ->> To Paul's question, I think such a system may have a significant effect for news companies' bottom line -- someday. Obviously it's not going to be enough to turn things around by the end of the year and some newspapers will probably still die out anyway, but with the way things are going you either make something like this work or there will be no news at all. How long can you keep turning out stories for free? Eventually things will change and I have a feeling this could be the very faintest light at the end of the tunnel. And if it is, newspapers and other online news media sources who benefit from it will owe Steve Jobs big. I just wonder if photojournalism be a part of this new beginning? |

->> Scott,
I've been dreaming of a Photo Mechanic Mobile version with a Card Reader since I waited in line for the first generation model. |
