->> If it works, it could be industry changing...I wish them the best.
On a side (more photo related) note, I notice they have two cartoonists and two presentation editors on staff so far - I do REALLY hope they continue to pursue their excellence in photojournalism with this new venture. I know there are ways around it out - and that some of the photographers might actually prefer to remain freelance - but it would be a great thing to see them develop some sort of photo staff. Multiple Pulitzers winners can't hurt.
Anxious to see what happens...

->> I agree Chip. I would hate to see photographers as a second thought or way to cheap out. Whether if be staff shooters or freelancers, I hope that they consider them an important part of the new product, and pay them fairly. I am tired of photo being considered a second class citizen and a way for publications to save money, by either not having staffers or paying next to nothing to freelancers for images. Even worse would be submitted photos used for free, but I don't think that is what they are aiming for in this new venture.
Good luck to them.

->> Paul,
Just my humble opinion, but if anything, the internet is MORE visual rather than less, and I believe the people at the RMN, like the P-I folks, know this.
In other words, visual journalism has more chance on the net then it did on newsprint...

->> This is one of the comments on the news release. I hate to think but despite the "internet being a more visual medium" this is probably a pretty common reaction
"Sorry that you didn’t make your goal because I was looking forward to reading local news gathered by real reporters instead of wire copy and large photographs the other guys have. Good luck in whatever you folks decide to do. I hoped that my pledge would have not been in vain." |

->> I really think they gave themselves an impossible hurdle to meet.
"...if it can raise 50,000 pledges of at least $4.99 a month. The deadline is April 23." gave them a 30 day time frame.
It seems to me and from what I have seen and experienced that internet subscriptions of almost any type, even free, takes some time to build. You have to start with content, get the subscribers and keep going. Pledges or not I just would not have guessed that would happen at all.
Obviously they were hoping to look for some indication of revenue so they could possibly get some capital guarantees before launching. I just don't think that was firm grasp of the online world.
Certainly there are people here who are more experienced than I in this area so maybe we will hear from a few. |
