Hey there Steve,

Thanks for being a bit patient. The good news is that they are allowing the EOS 1D.

*Additionally, based on customer feedback, the original EOS-1D has been added to the qualifying equipment list.

So you should be all set. Thanks for your support over the years, and glad to hear that your 1D is still ticking..

So you know, I did forward your message to the powers, and you and others helped them understand the concern.

Thanks,
Mike

The main CPS page still does not list the 1D.

However, when I went through the registration process, the 1D was in the list of cameras, so I entered it in with serial number and all, along with the rest of my gear.

Upon hitting "next", however, I received a "membership disqualified" page, stating that I had insufficient gear.

Hmmmm...

EF 17-35mm f2.8 L
EF 28-70mm f2.8 L
EF 300mm f2.8 L

I am not going to get rid of these lenses though. They are paid for and, oddly enough, they work amazingly well when you consider that they have been relegated to amateur status.

As I shuffle down the sidewalk in my pajamas and bathrobe looking for a new service center for my aging L series lenses, I envision myself mumbling the following:

"I don't need any of it, none of it at all . . . except for my Canon hat . . . that's all I need . . . just my Canon hat, and my, my red Canon monopod pad . . . just my hat and my monopod pad and that is all I need and I don't need anything else . . ."

->> Here is the latest from Mike Gurley:

Hi Steve,

I got this email information about a half hour after I got your information.
Please see these below changes to the CPS membership application available
now:
Items added to equipment eligibility list for CPS membership qualification:
EOS-1D
EF 85 1.2 L USM
EF 28-70 2.8 L USM
EF 35-350 3.5-5.6 L USM
EF 70-200 4.0 L USM
Items that can now be added to a member's profile to qualify for CPS
service support:
Life-Size Converter EF
Extender EF 1.4x II
Extender EF 2x II

My guess is that the site was not fully enabled with the items listed above, so that you may have gotten kicked from the site.

Try again, and check to see if all the items are on the list.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Mike

However, Canon is not calling the 300 2.8 non-is (which I use as well) a non-professional lens directly. Since they do not service it they don't have it on the list of qualifying items.

I suppose they could come out with a list of 'professional lenses', but then that would create an equal mess. I use my 85/1.8 all the time, but is that a 'professional lens'? Apparently the first criteria for inclusion on the list is if they service it. Though it does look like they are making amends for previous transgressions by adding the 1D back in along with some slighted older L glass. Maybe the 300 will be added back eventually.

To me the biggest issue is that they are not requiring tear sheets or letters from employers or editors. Requiring that you make the majority of your income from photography is unenforceable.

If given the choice of shooting either of these lenses in low light, which would you choose? DUH! I'm one who believes it isn't the equipment you use that makes you a professional. Their are many more important qualities that go into being a pro. Knowing this, why doesn't Canon just let those who are already members in good standing remain so and just put out a list of equipment that will no longer be serviced by them. All new members who make their sole living and can prove it will be able to become members regardless of what equipment they use as long as it's Canon. I don't think their are very many pro's who use Rebel body's and the lower end of the lens line to make their living.

However, I'm with Chuck on this one. How can you possibly say the 10-22 EF-S is a professional lens, but the 300 2.8L is not? Seriously, Canon?

For the record, I'm not having a problem registering the equipment itself. The 1D shows up in the drop-down menu on the gear page, and I can enter in the serial number and add it to my list. However, once I've put all of my gear in and hit "next", I get a page with this message:

"Disqualified for CPS membership

You do not have enough products registered to apply for CPS membership. However, you can still continue to update your product details once you have enough products to register."

So despite the fact that I have the required products registered, their system isn't seeing that as being the case. Hopefully it'll get straightened out early next week when the CPS crew returns to work.

I just checked my membership page again, and the 1D has actually been taken off of the drop down menu of cameras that can be registered. The one I had already registered is now listed as "other" on my equipment profile. The body is also off of the list on the main page that outlines the required equipment, which I thought had been updated over the weekend.

I sure hope this doesn't mean they're actually going back and keeping the 1D off of the list. I'm still waiting to hear back from CPS customer service about this, and as always, I'll post if I hear anything relevant.
