Cost of shutter replacement - 1D MKIIn
Bill Mitchell, Photographer

->> I just got back the estimate from Canon (Irvine) on replacing the shutter on my MKIIn. I was expecting the more customary price of $200 - $250 that I've paid before (including as recently as last November on a different body). But this time my estimate is over $300, and they don't indicate that there's any other damage than the shutter.

I will probably call Canon tomorrow to question it, but what's been the range that others have paid recently to replace the shutter? Thanks.

->> Paid $325 for my last shutter repair on a MarkII. That was last fall, too.

The repair before that on a different body was $550 because they decided I needed a new top plate for that camera. Actually, I think they not only replace that but also installed a new sensor. There were two soft spots in my images that was gone and my files seemed a bit sharper as well after the repair. I didn't complain because I basically got a new camera. Then a few months later I totaled it :-(

It blew apart right as Kelly Pavlik was stepping into the ring to defend his middleweight title against Marco Antonio Rubio.

->> Clark and Jason,

Thanks for the input. I guess I just got off lucky the last two times when I paid only $200. Oh well ... it's a cost of business.

->> Hold on to your seat! I just paid $484.42 to replace the shutter on a Mark II body. That was about 6 weeks ago and that is a non CPS member price. I believe it's 20% discount for CPS members, could be wrong on that one. But in any case it has gone up quite a bit. I replaced the Shutter on my other Mark II body about a year and a half ago and it cost me about $350.00. Good luck.

->> I've had this body for three years so the shutter count is way high --- somewhere around 240,000. It's the second shutter on this body, the first which was replaced at no cost. And, no, I'm not a CPS member.

Rick, your $484.42 cost is REAL sticker shock. I guess I don't feel so bad now. Repair costs are going up ... is Canon trying to help subsidize all of the warranty repairs they've had to do on the MKIII's? :)

->> Don't forget there are other options for repair besides CPS. Midstate Camera repair in RI has been referred many times before, since the gear is out of warranty, might be worth a call since they turn things around quickly.

->> I just got off the phone with Canon in Irvine, CA. The variable pricing depends on the age of the camera body. For my three year old body, the minimum of the range is $290 which is what they are charging me before shipping is added; max repair cost in the range is around $500. For a newer 1DMKIIn, the minimum is $190, which is exactly what I paid the last time. She says that they "have to do more" as the body gets older which is why the range increases with the age of the camera.

So now I have my answer. The moral of the story, I guess, is to continually buy new equipment to keep repair costs lower. Or something like that. I'm sure that Canon would love to have us replace our equipment every year.

->> Christopher -- I've asked myself that question and have even had a high count 200K+ shutter replaced proactively recently and it failed on the 4th shoot.

My conclusion.. don't fix it if it isn't broken and have a good backup plan in the event that it does fail. Annual clean and checks on equipment is also a good idea and may lower the risk of failure but it won't prevent it.

Final note, repairs are a real cost of doing business so save, budget,insure, and charge accordingly.
