->> The link I used via robgalbraith.com is the Europe Canon site. All I had to do was enter my camera's serial number and it took me to the download page. Haven't loaded it on the camera yet, not sure if I want to be the first out of the chute . . . |

->> If you read the Canon site closely, they are not saying anything new or that there is a new "fix". From the Canon site:

-----------------------
Cause
If an AF point other than the center AF point is used, focus may become soft.
Answer:
Support:
Free AF accuracy checks and adjustments will be provided to affected products.
...
Based on the comments and suggestions of professional photographers, we have also created supplementary AI Servo AF information (AI Servo Auto Focus Manual) for users to fully utilize the AF capacity of the cameras. Please refer to this information when you shoot with the EOS-1D Mark III and EOS-1Ds Mark III cameras.
...
The above information, together with the provision of free AF accuracy checks and adjustments, allow users to utilize the AF function of the EOS-1D Mark III and EOS-1Ds Mark III with greater assurance.
-----------------------------
What they are saying is they are offering a free "check and adjustment" to anyone who thinks they are having problems with the autofocus - that's it. And oh by the way...read the manual.
The latest firmware update, according to the documentation, does not have anything to do with AF.
So basically the only news here is they will do a free check if you think you're having problems.
What is interesting to note is the service notice apparently only addresses miscalibration of outer AF points.
If I remember correctly, Rob Galbrath's tests were all done with mostly the center AF point anyway. So it appears this announcement really has nothing to do with any of the problems most commonly being reported. |
