| ->> How do people who do not have Photoshop/Aperture/Lightroom/Photo Mechanic, etc resize an image? I feel like a moron, but I had somebody ask me this and I didn't really know. I just use photo programs. But what if a person (say, your wife's friend) wants to resize an image for the web or email? On a PC? on a Mac? |

->> Mac: iPhoto should work.
PC: Microsoft Picture Editor.
Web: Picasa, Photoshop Express, or any of these here: http://tinyurl.com/dkyd2b |

I've used it for simple images. |

->> Microsoft's Paint comes as part of the OS package and will do it on some file types.
Microsoft Office Picture Manager also has crop and resize capabilities. |

->> Hey Craig,
I just tell them to quit fooling around with other software and spend $100 on Photoshop Elements. |

| ->> I second that Alan. Before I got Lightroom, I used Windows Photo Gallery to crop and changing exposure/contrast and Windows Photo Manager to resize images. I even captioned my images. You just have to remember to put the caption info in the Subject field even though one would think the info goes into the Comment field. If you put the info in the Subject field, whoever edits the images at the wireservice will be able to see the info using whatever program they use. |

->> If they have windows, then open the folder that has the images. Click on the image to highlight it. Once the image is highlighted, on the left side there will be a link that says "Email this file" click that and you will be asked if you want to resize the image or send it as is.
A quick and dirty method I use when I want to resize an image but don't have PM or CS3 open, is to do this and then save the image from the email dialog using the Save As command.

->> Google's Picasa. Free.
Or if they use Outlook, it comes set up to re-size photos for email. It's one of the most maddening features for me because my flock of amateur correspondents are always sending us tiny photos to use for our publication. If you use Outlook, trust me, downsizing images is NOT the problem... |

->> Irfanview is great as well, and free for non-commercial use. Felt compelled, as one who has depended on IP protections for creative work both as a photographer and programmer, to point this out.
If it's used in a commercial (work-related) environment, it must be paid for. |
