Canon USA has announced that it will be offering a free repair for any EOS 5D digital SLR in the U.S. or Canada that is suffering from a problem where the mirror can detach from the mirror box due to "deterioration in the strength of the adhesive. |

->> Nice find Gene!!
My mirror popped free last Nov - http://www.sportsshooter.com/message_display.html?tid=31213
I ended up doing the super glue repair in that linked thread above and it worked like a champ then and is still going strong today.
I called Canon at the number at the website Gene provided and told them what I had experiecned and done to remedy it. I expected them to claim that my repair voided the offer but they said "No problem, send it in and we'll fix it."
Cool!! |

| ->> Avoid using super glue for camera gear. The vapors of the glue can stick to other part where you'd rather they not be. I glued a filter, which rattled, and ended up with a fine coating of glue vapor on the front element of a 17-35. We had to replace the front element as a result. |

->> Dang!! too late. Mine popped off and I crazy glued it on just last week. The glass mirror is also chipped in the corner. I wonder if I just sent it in if they'd fix it.
Thanks for the heads-up Gene. |

->> Sandy- that's the exact scenario with mine - slightly chipped mirror corner.
I explained what had happened to mine to the woman at Canon and she said that they replace the mirror anyway so send it on in. I am going to take her at her word and see what happens. |

->> CANADA INFO:
In Canada - Canon is sending out service Pre-Registration emails to users so the cameras are pre-booked for faster turn around times. Got the email about 10 days ago but haven't heard anything yet ...... Even with an arctic butterfly my sensor is kind of dirty so I'm looking at it as a free clean and check as well !
All the mirror replacement repairs are being done in Mississauga, Ont and not in the Calgary service centre. |

| ->> Are they only repairing 5D's with already broken mirrors? Or will they do preemptive reinforcement? |

->> I asked the same question when I got the RA for my primary 5D and was told that they would do pre-emptive repairs. Now... this was early on in the process (day 1) and was just the one operator at Canon that I spoke with. Who knows what will really happen.
My primary body is in for the repair right now and once it is back and operational, I intend to pursue the option of pre-emptive repair on the backup 5D that has not yet had the mirror loosening issue.
Will report back what I find out |

->> UPDATE>>>
My 5D left here on 2/11 and headed to Canon's facility in NJ. It arrived back in my hands today - 2/23.
It appears that CPS put a new mirror/tray combo in there. They also replaced my focusing screen and it looks like they did ano verall clean and check with a firmware flash.
I have yet to shoot with it but I am pleased. I am now going to try and see about getting my backup fixed as a prophylactic measure rather than waiting for it to break. We'll see how that goes with Canon. |

->> Update....
Finally got my "repaired" 5D back into service and found that there were visible drops of oil and finger smudges in the viewfinder.
I thought I could take out the focusing screen and clean everything up but the oil and smudges are inside the viewing prism where I cannot access.
All I can assume is that this funk got there when they made the repairs. I called Canon up and they immediately ordered another repair order to clean things up. Camera is off to NJ again and we'll see how it comes back this time.
The woman did say that I could send my other 5D (backup body) in for the mirror repair even though it had yet to break. I intend to do just this once my other 5D gets back in my hands and is all fine. |

->> So after all the bellyaching about the new CPS issues and other Canon bashing here at SS... I have had a very pleasant surprise.
As I detailed above, my 5D came back fixed. When I went to use it, I found oil and fingerprints inside the prism where I could not get to clean it. I called Canon back at the number at the link above in Gene's first post, and the girl there issued a priority fix and sent me a UPS ship label.
Well.. the 5D shipped out last friday and arrived back here today - one week total. The folks at Canon repair replaced the top and rear lcd screens. They put in a whole new eyepiece and prism assembly. They installed a brand new top cover and dial assembly along with a new hotshoe. They adjusted focus and exposure. The cleaned the CMOS, then checked it to factory specs and updated the firmware.
All of this was done for free and in one week. Now my old and heavily "loved" 5D looks brand new as 90% of the exterior of the camera got replaced. |
