Freelance Rates in New Orleans, Philly and San Diego
Will Nunnally, Photographer
Brookline | MA | USA | Posted: 10:57 PM on 02.02.09
->> I currently work in Boston for the Herald and a few other community papers and I'm considering moving to New Orleans, Philadelphia or San Diego for a change of pace. I'm trying to compare cost of living and figure out what I can make freelancing.

Does anyone know if the papers in those cities (Times-Picayune, Inquirer, Daily News and Union-Tribune) use freelance photographers and what rates they pay? Any information/advice would be excellent.

Thanks,

Will

I would give a call to the photo editors of those newspapers.

->> Will, there are Sports Shooter members from each of the papers you discuss. A quick search revealed:

Chris Granger; Staff Photographer, Times-Picayune
http://www.sportsshooter.com/members.html?id=4520

David Maialetti; Staff Photographer, Philadelphia Daily News
http://www.sportsshooter.com/members.html?id=8092

Karl Stolleis; Multimedia Editor, Philadelphia Inquirer
http://www.sportsshooter.com/members.html?id=5159

David Brooks: Visual Journalist: The San Diego Union-Tribune
http://www.sportsshooter.com/members.html?id=4539

I'm not sure that these people are the ones you'd need to talk to, but it would probably be a good start. Why not shoot them a message through their member pages and seeing if they can answer your questions.
