being city people, we don't drive as much as we did in the past but a GPS is definitely helpful and after recently visiting friends in Rochester, we were hooked. Just not sure if we would be better off getting a different model.
I normally hate to get refurbished anything-what do you think about a refurbished GPS? |

->> Debra,
I recently purchased the Garmin nuvi 260W and have been very pleased with it. I used it on a trip to New Mexico and it worked great getting me to destinations and finding restaurants and gas stations along the way. I would suggest going with the W models because they give you a like more screen space. What ever model you get you will find it helpful. |

I had a Nuvi 350 x2 then stolen and now a Nuvi 250. Love them both. The flip up antenna on my first 350 stopped working and had to have the unit replaced under warranty.
I also have an e-map and use Garmin on my boat too. Great products with a GREAT customer service dept. I've called them
3x with issues and each time I spoke to someone that KNEW the unit and was able to help me without reading a script. |

| ->> Not a Garmin, but we use a TomTom, right now you can get a new one for $129.00 pretty much everywhere, BestBuy even gave us $40 gift cards when we bought two for my hubby's kids. that was a $40 gift card for each TomTom. Not bad. The TomTom works pretty well, I like it. Especially when John Cleese goes on about Napoleon. :) |

turn left NOW :-) .. It will prevent you from looking at the little screen and rearend the cop car in front of you.

->> Debra,
I have one of the Nuvi models and it works great. Don't know how I would have survived the move to Duluth from Madison, WI without it.
One thing I might mention though is that when driving in downtown Minneapolis with all the cavernous streets and high rises, the signal would repeatedly drop off. I'm thinking the buildings might have blocked the satellite reception and being in NYC, I would imagine this could be worse. Perhaps it was my model and maybe Garmin has something setup in NYC to negate this, but it might be worth checking out or looking into.
I did a little research myself and found this thread and while it's a couple of years old speaks to some of the problems I have experienced with my brand new unit just this year...

->> The 200 does have voice prompts, but I believe the 260 is the first model that gives you the street name in the prompt.
To me that was an important distinction - turn left in 500 ft does not mean as much as in 500 ft. turn left on Main St. when you are in a city.
I've had the Nuvi 360 for a couple of years and really like it.
I just upgraded the map to the 2009 version - (for over $60), and the process is sort of a pain and took quite a while. |

->> +1 Garmin
I've had 2, first one was stolen but was a solid unit and the second has been in service going on 3rd year with out any issues.
The only thing that I would warn you on is getting with the flip out antenna, if they even make them that way anymore. Had the hinge switch fail on the first unit, Garmin replaced it and never had an issue after that.
The one feature that I do miss and didn't expect to was having the unit speak street names. Turn left versus turn left on Williams Rd is an issue when you come to a 6 way intersection. My next unit will have that feature again. |

->> I have a 255 and my son a 205. Both are good units but may lack some of the more sophisticated options. Wish mine had an option to keep you on interstates. It may be that I just haven't figured it out yet.
I actually think the "think" time is faster on the 205.
I've seen a couple of TomTom's that have cool features like the MPH display turning red when it determines you are over the speedlimit. |

->> Alan if your Garmin is constantly taking you off the highway it may be setup to think that you aren't driving a car. I had the same thing happen to me. Every time I got on a highway it would tell me to take the next exit. It even told me to make a u-turn in the middle of the Mt. Hope bridge and get off. I called Garmin to complain and found out that the unit was configured to think that I was on a bicycle! Once I got it setup as a car all my problems were resolved.
You may be setup as a commercial truck, or pedestrian or some other mode that isn't allowed on freeways. |

->> Thanks Eric. I'll check that, but I think it just likes 2 lane highways because it can always find a shorter (miles and/or time) way than I want to go.
I really wish it would just "learn" my driving habits on trips I take a lot. I know my way and how I want to get there. I just like having it along for detours, finding food and gas, knowing where I am at any given moment, etc... The recalculation drives me nuts, so I usually just push view map instead of take me there. |

->> I bought a refurbished hand held Garmin (220 something IIRC) off Amazon. Oddly enough, it doesn't display the correct grid coordinates. Ever.
It's been off as much as 50m in the past. I'm not happy, but it was cheap enough for me to not really care. I'm buying a 5 series after this deployment.

->> Alan,
I think there is a setting to give preference to interstates or local roads.
Also, when you know where you're going but want the GPS on just in case, you might want to use the setting to turn off the speech entirely. That way the GPS will still recalculate the route but you won't have to listen to it bitch at you every time you go the way you want. ;-) |

->> I've never owned a GPS but the time has come to get one. But trying to figure out which one is best for me seems pretty overwhelming. Just look at the posts here, and at the number of new models recently released.
Can you share the features you most recomnmend? For example, there are a couple of Garmin models shown on Amazon.com that seem very similar but one offers traffic updates for life for an additional cost. Is it worth having?
Thanks! |

->> For me the one feature that I didn't think was 'worth it' when I changed units is having the names of the streets spoken by the unit. Turn left means very little when you are facing a 5 corner intersection. Lesson learned, next unit will have the street names spoken.
The FM feature is useful only in areas where the service is active. In Boston maybe, in my city not so important. |

->> Adam so true, I have a Navigon that I got a while back, maybe 2 years ago. Unfortunatly the only Navigon systems we can now get in the US is mobile phone versions.
Guessing they really didn't take off in the states but I feel it was one of the better if not best organized systems and the user interface was extremely simple to use. I bought my wife a TomTom and it was so much different from the Navigon and we both don't like it but it works.
I do plan on getting the Navigon iPhone app when mine finally kicks the bucket which it is getting a little sluggish.
Anyways I highly recommend the Navigon systems if you are up to putting it on a mobile phone.... |
