| ->> This may have already been answered in another thread, but Santa is bringing me the new macbook for x-mas and I was planning to transfer my important files and such from my Powerbook G4 through firewire, but it doesn't look like the new macbook has firewire. What do I do? |

I just got that computer and I was very surprised to see that as well.
I am still very happy with the new computer |

->> I transferred my Powerbook G4 to my new Mackbook via Airport!!
It took four hours, but it worked great, for whatever reason the ethernet cable I had didn't work.

->> Rebecca, I don't know if the USB cable works, but I had to install the Migration assistant on the old Powerbook G4. When you have the Migration assistant on both computers, the options available will show on the Migration window.

it works with migration assistant?
Will,
I see a firewire 800 for the new macbook pro, but not the new macbook. |

->> The new 15" Macbook Pro has Firewire 800, I think Rebecca is talking about the new 13" Macbook which has no firewire at all.
I just got one myself. While I will miss the Target Disk Mode, I love the size factor. I'd buy a smaller one if Apple made it. |

| ->> To use ethernet, you would need a crossover cable to directly connect the computers. Otherwise 2 cables into a hub would do the trick. If you don't have any of that Yamil's wireless solution looks good, just set it up and let it go overnight. |

->> The Macbook is considered a "prosumer" product, and as a result, has only USB. In order to get firewire, you'll need a MacBook PRO.

->> If I have a G4 Powerbook, and a MacBook Pro, will my Photoshop and Photo Mechanic transfer or do I need to dig up the CDs?
And, if my G4 is 2.1 mhz and the Pro is 2.8, is it really a lot faster?

->> No need for a crossover ethernet cable when connecting Macs together. The ports are Auto Sensing and will adjust accordingly. Use a regular ethernet cable.
Debra, you will want to install PhotoShop from the disc. Hopefully you are running CS3 or 4. You might want to upgrade if not to maximize performance on the Intel processor. |

is the MacBook Pro at 2.8ghz noticeably faster than my G4 at 2.1? |

->> Hi Deb:
The fastest PowerBook G4 had the 1.67ghz PPC processor and the new MacBook Pros have Core 2 Duo 2.4ghz to 2.8ghz Intel processors. The Intel MacBooks are more than twice as fast as a PowerBook. That is why I bought the first generation Black MacBook Core Duo two years ago. It runs circles around a PowerBook. The 2.8ghz is an option on the new MacBook Pro. Consider the AppleCare 3 year warranty, you can get it for less from places like smalldog.com.
Buy memory on your own. Upgrading the hard drive is easy. You get more bang for the buck when you max out the memory. FYI, you can get up to a 17% Apple discount if you are a member of NPPA. |

| ->> On the Apple site, there is documentation on how to perform the migration via your network ethernet connection, eliminating the need for FW/FW connections. You just need to have the Migration Assistant installed on the source computer. See here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3231 There is also documentation on using this configuration with earlier MacBook and MacBook Pros (2008) on the site... |

->> "->> You do not need a crossover cable on a mac. The ports auto sense and switch when necessary."
well, I couldn't get the cable I had to work!!
The cable is good, I tested it.
Both machines worked on Ethernet by themselves.
but... when I connected them together, the migration assistand couldn't find the source machine on the system, but when I changed to Airport, it immediately did!!
BTW, this IS first Macbooks without Firewire, if Apple considered this a Preosumer system, they would have NEVER included Firewire in them!! But the previous versions HAD Firewire.. Apple did REMOVE One Firewire port from their Macbook Pros, they used to have two, now they have only one!! Dies this mean that The Macbook Pros are less of a Pro or Half of a Pro machine now?? I've had Mac laptos from the first Aluminum Powerbooks and now run TWO Mac Lapops, One Macbook (newest Model without Firewire) and One Macbook Pro(Previous Model Matte Screen, Two Firewire Ports, that I picked up as a End-of-Life Clearance from Roberts) IMHO Apple Dropped the ball in dropping one Firewire Port from the Macbook Pros and Firewire Eintirely form the Macbook line!! It has more to do with economis than the PRO level of the machines!! Don't get me started with the Glossy screen, because this would make BOTH Macbook and Macbook Pros a purely AMATEUR system!!

->> The original iBook (colored) did not have Firewire either! I owned one and I used a USB Zip drive to transfer files to and from it. Check out the specs. here.
http://support.apple.com/kb/SP126
For those interested in using Ethernet or a wireless connection with Migration Assistant, read this Apple Support Document.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3231
Another way of accomplishing this is to buy a back-up drive that has USB and Firewire. Clone your old computer's drive to the new hard drive over Firewire, then use USB and Migration Assistant to finish the job. After you are done, you have a new back-up drive that works with both computers! You can find 500 Gig drives full sized externals for about $100.

->> Rich,
I know I-Books didn't have Firewire, I had one too!!
But I said all Previous MACBOOKS had it, until now!!
IIRC, they added FW on I-Books when they started the White I-Books, I don't remember if my Gray Clamshell I-Book had FW, but that was over 8 years ago. |

->> The Gray Clamshell did have Firewire. Firewire was supposed to replace SCSI and also allowed high transfer rates for video and data. Now USB 2.0 become the standard and although in most cases it is slower it works fine. Gigabit Ethernet is a a viable mean of data transfer as well.
The point is you can do without Firewire "if" you have a hard drive with USB and Firewire connections and you do not have a video camera that requires FW. Apple did drop the ball by not promoting the Firewire interface, but including it on their Pro model was a deliberate move. Perhaps they will create a 13" MacBook Pro. I doubt that will happen. We may see a Mac NetBook soon!
You can use multiple Firewire drives on your MacBook Pro's single port. Firewire drives are daisy chain-able as you may know. You must attach a power supply to "self powered" drives when doing so on a notebook. The power draw is too much.
To transfer files from your Mac to a MacBook you can: burn to DVD or CD, use a flash drive, USB drive, Ethernet or wireless connection.
The new MacBooks weigh less than the last version, but the MacBook Pros weigh more. |
