Image transfer AND rotation How To?
Jim Pierce, Photographer

->> I currently use BreezeBrowser Downloader Pro to transfer files from the CF Cards to my PC.

This also rotates the files as they are being transfered but add's a great deal of time. If they were all shot landscape they download VERY fast but since I shoot 95% portrait (Vertical) they are rotated and it takes 3-4 times longer.

How do others transfer the images, what software do you use and do you rotate at the same time.

My method transfers 1000 images from a 4GB Sandisk III using usb 2.0 in 20-25 minutes, including rotating them.

I want this to be faster if it can be.

Jim

->> Photo Mechanic is what you need, you can insert your meta-data, copyright and caption info onto all the images as you ingest them into your computer, I'm not familiar with BreezeBrowser but Photo Mechanic is one of the most widely used programs for downloading files to your computer, great for sorting and much more. You can download a trial version at www.camerabits.com

Hope that helps you out. Oh and the images appear in your computer as you shot them so vertical images appear vertical.

->> I'll second Photo Mechanic. I can download (using the Ingest function) a 2 GB Sandisk Extreme IV card in a Lexar Firewire 800 reader in about two minutes. If your camera tags verticals as such PM will rotate them and I don't think it adds any time to do so.

->> Derick, Kevin,

Thanks for the info. I have looked at PM many times but just did not pull the trigger, but will this week-end for sure.

It looks like it can do much more than just transfer/ingest files from a card.

One other thing I am looking into and PM might be able to do this. Can you add a watermark to all files at once and make a copy of the image with the watermark AND keep the original?

I am looking at doing this prior to uploading to Photoreflect as the "proof" that photoreflect adds is not enough.

->> Jim I'll 3rd the Photo Mechanic. I'm not understanding the rotation though. Most cameras simply set the rotation value in the file, it's up to the program to read the rotation value and display the image in the proper orientation.

Our old Fuji S2's for example DIDN'T have the ability to write the orientation into the file. As a result we had to do rotations manually (actually we had a CS action that did it). Does Photoreflect not read the metadata in the file to determine orientation?

I don't believe (I could be wrong) that the rotation that PM does actually effects the files. It's only read by PM when you are displaying the images within PM.

Yes you can select a one or a group of photos and using the save as function, watermark and save them to a different folder thus preserving the originals. You can also, size, adjust compression, convert to sRGB, and sharpen in the process too.

->> Eric you're right, the default (soft) rotation doesn't touch the file's data and simply displays it correctly. This is why it doesn't add any/much extra time to the Ingest. PM also passes the rotation along to Photoshop so a photo opens properly there when invoked with the Edit command.

PM also has an option to "Apply Rotation to JPEGs..." under the Tools menu that converts the "soft" rotation to a "hard" rotation in a near loss-less way.

->> Kevin I didn't know about the 'hard' rotation as I haven't needed to rotate an image since moving to D2's several years back. Good to know. Also Kirk over at Camera Bits sets the standard for software support. The guy actually called me at home in the evening after putting his kids to bed to workout some issues that we were having.

The number of providers (service or product) that have EVER called me from home after hours is 3. Groover, Jason Burfield, and Kirk Barker. You won't go wrong with PM or camerabits for that matter.

Yes, PM can put a watermark automatically with great control over size, color, opacity, and placement. You can even base the watermark on EXIF data inside the file. And of course, the originals are untouched.

->> Thanks everyone!! I will be purchasing this today, once I post 8 hockey game photos from this morning.

Eric, in regards to the rotation. Prior to using Breezebrowser downloader Pro, I just copied the files from a card to a directory using Windows explorer, 4 years ago this is what worked for the workload I had. Doing this does not rotate the files vertically, which is 90% of how I take them, they view sideways. I found Breezebrowser downloader which rotates them upon transfer, it has just been too slow for what I am now doing. The mark II's and IIN's do mark the files so they know how it was taken, windows just could not read this and I found the BreezeBrowser software which did. However, my needs/wants have changed and PM looks to be the fix. This will also allow me to watermark etc.

I can now buy PM with confidence that it will do what I need.

Thanks everyone!

Jim

->> OK I am all set to buy Photo Mechanic software but from what I see I need to buy two copies if I want to be able to use it on my desktop PC and Laptop.

Am I reading this correctly? This is a significant cost when I will NEVER use both at the same time. My laptop is used while I am going from game to game and my desktops are used there after. I nor anybody will be using this at the same time but it looks like this will be a $300 purchase rather than $150.00

Am I reading this correctly?

As Eric mentioned above about Camerabits support and that Kirk contacted him on off hours. Well Kirk saw my post and responded in a private E-Mail, off hours, his time and it is much appreciated, Kirk!!

A plug for Camera bits support!
