| ->> I've been with them for over two years, and these fees are higher than what I paid. I paid $250 for setup and $45 a month for hosting, no limit on storage or bandwidth. As far as I am aware, and according to my web stats, I have never been down. I absolutely love them, could not be happier. |

->> Phil.... math?
$45 per month x 12 months = $540 which is more than $480 thay charged me. Now the setup fee is a bit higher, though!
NeonSky is indeed a good service, but they do have some issues that might keep me from re-upping in February
1) The content manager is a bit clunky
2) All caption info has to be typed in as their backend process will not exract metadata from IPTC fields
3) No deep-linking on their flash-based sites while LiveBooks and APhotoFolio do offer this |

->> Harrison; when I signed up they did not have the one-time fee option, which is obviously now reflecting a discount over the monthly arrangement. The sign-up fee is more, so it balances, but you have to view that against the fact that there is NO bandwidth limit, NO storage limit, NO limit on the number of galleries, or of images in those galleries, so it's carte-blanche...
The thing I wish they had and don't is detailed web traffic stats. I fly blind in that regard; I have no idea what my traffic is, which is not desirable, but I live with it. Search engine "friendliness" is another topic I wish were more developed, but again, I just live with it. It's never been down, not once in two years, the interface does load slowly, but works very well. And no, the back end does not extract metadata, but again, I view that as a small thing.
As an aside, speaking of extracting metadata, I have never seen such a cumbersome process of posting images on the web as that that exists on Sportsshooter. It is a major pain in the ass to change your member page. Why does SS not extract metadata? And the requirement that an image has to be reuploaded if you change text is absurd... I've never understood that about the SS site.
As Christopher mentioned, NeonSky's service is excellent.
What is "deep-linking"? |

->> Phil,
NeonSky does offer VERY detailed webstats. Go here: http://www."yourdomainname".com/webstat, which uses the same user/password as your website. |

I use photo mechanic to upload to my photoshelter page, then to my sportsshooter member page from there. Cumbersome? Yep. Does it work really well? yep.

I am not saying that NeonSky is bad... just saying that they are missing some key components that will make me look elsewhere when I have to re-up and just as likely might make a new potential customer choose another service.
Here is a great example of deep linking...
Let's say that you are an image buyer and you go to Google and type in "frosted beard" cause you need that kind of image. The first return at google is an image on my website. However, when you click on the google link assuming that it will take you to that image, you are instead taken to my spalsh page. NeonSky has told me that this is due to the flash that they use at the site. They also say that they will fix it someday... So now you are this photo buyer and you have done all that you can to get to the image only to find yourself at the homepage with no idea of where to go within the site to find the photo.
By the way... I know about that specific example of "frosted beard" due to the detailed web stats that come with the NeonSky website. Use the link provided above. I saw that someone had found my site via a "search for frosted beard" and was curious so I googled it myself and discovered the deep linking issue.
Another way that deep linking is nice is that let's say a photo buyer wants an image that you have buried deep in your site. You know where it is so you go there and then copy the URL and paste it into an email to the client so they can get to the image without hunting around for it. You cannot do this with NeonSky right now.
This is a HUGE drawback to NeonSky in my eyes. Livebooks and APhotoFolio both have deep linking (or claim to). Not sure about the others. |
