online buyers beware

->> I was on Ebay today browsing camera equipment and almost sent $1200 U.S. for a Canon 1D Mark III to a man or woman who at the time said they were in Michigan, before my senses got the best of me. I know how much the cameras retail for brand new, I have one, and I know how much on average they sell used. But at first it seemed legit.

I checked his user feedback, which said 100 percent with 37 comments, all which were positive. When I sent him messages I got instant responses, pertaining to my questions. Then they told me to send my contact info and pay via Western Union and after it cleared I would have my new camera in three to seven business days. Any transaction outside of Ebay, is “Transaction Interference” a serious offense. So I asked them for the serial number as well as a phone number so I could confirm the info. He sent me a European phone number and said it might be busy when I phoned. When I continued to ask why the camera was so cheap he replied “I will tell you some things about this low price. You know some factories have a special price for employees? I mean a little one, of course. Well one of my friends has this privilege. I think that’s all I can tell you.”

So it was from that point on I was convinced this person was trying to scam me. I Googled for more info about Western Union+Ebay scams after talking with co-workers about the email and found lots of info in relation to. In my head I couldn’t get the old adage out of my head “ If its sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” I hope there isn’t anyone out there who has fallen for a similar scam, luckily for me I didn’t.

->> Wells fargo, and (formerly) Washington mutual will no longer accept ANY transfers from Western Union into their accounts as such a HUGE % of them are scams... as a law (not rule) on ebay if the seller asks for western union or a personal check, IT IS FRAUD! Ebay has made statements to this effect as well...

my two cents worth... Some scam sites do the same thing...

->> Chad, an easy way to look a this...

If this were a legit offer of a $3500 used camera for $1200, you would be taking advantage of the seller to buy it. That's what these guys depend on. Your greed. Just like the guys at the mall who want to sell you a DVD player box full of bricks out of their trunk for $20. You think it's stolen and a good deal. The sell wants you to think it's stolen. Scam

->> A few years ago my friend was selling a $4,000 Dell XPS laptop on Ebay. He got an email saying he was paid thru Paypal.

Took the laptop to FedX drop off store, got home, checked his Paypal account and the money wasn't there. The payment email was a spoof.

He ran to the FedX site and grabbed his package back.

Close!

EBay is requiring ALL sellers to offer either PayPal or an approved merchant account starting in December or January. There is a lot of noise on the eBay boards about it. I've used PayPal since 2003 and have never had one ounce of trouble.

All EBay transactions will have to be able to checkout through their (eBay's)gateway. If the buyer requests to send a check or MO the seller MAY accept the request. Sellers will not be able to REQUIRE checks / M.O. / Wester Union etc.

So in the near future eBay scams may become far and few between.
