D1H Dead

->> I think my D1H I use for work finally kicked the bucket tonight. Its been on the brink for a while now but I think it is finished. It made a funny noise . Sounded like the shutter fell apart when I took a picture but the camera kept working. The display would read 8888 across everything. I'd remove the battery and it would reset for a while but won't even do that now. I wondered if any one has experienced anything similar to this. I'm trying to look at things in a positive fashion. One of the final frames the camera took was a keeper!

| ->> I, too am worried about my D1h. My paper purchased 5 bodies, 5 17-35's and 5 80-200's for us back in Dec. 2001. Since then, they have been used and abused daily for nearly 7 years. Now they and the lenses are on their last legs and our company (MNG) is unwilling to either pay for repairs, or put out money for new equipment. My boss and I (We are now a staff of 2 from the 5 in 2001) are just waiting for the day when the working bodies we have go tits up. I bought a D2h earlier this year, just so I would have a reliable body to make images. Thanks for letting me know what to look for, so I will know when the end is neigh. |

| ->> you want a replacement? I've got a box of 12 of them gathering dust ... all depreciated to zero ... might get several thousand more actuations out of one. |

->> Funny thing is you could probably find an F4 or F5 that will still work for another decade.
My D1H died a few years ago.
Technology is great but expensive. |

->> if I could remember how to load film I'd really miss my F5, but not the F4. That said, so far my D3 is the closest I've felt to my F5 since going digital in '98.
everyone who expressed interest in my surplus D1H's, as soon as I get to work Monday I'll be contacting you with a price. |

| ->> What Matt said, put it in a small wooden boat, pile it full of memory cards (not batteries, heh) and set it ablaze. :) |

| ->> That's funny you mentioned putting it on a boat and setting it ablaze. I was thinking the same thing. I think I saw Bart Simpson do that with some of his toys in an episode. Shooting the camera could be a funny altrernative also (I swear I'm not a violent person) :) |

| ->> I don't think the D1H has enough bulk for this to be effective, but what they did to the copy machine in Office Space comes to mind. |

->> I think it was very nice of Sean to offer the dozen he has gathering dust. But I don't think he should give them to Jonathon.
His paper should be the one to put up the money to buy replacement gear.
I bought a D1H last fall as a backup and it has worked and performed flawlessly. |

->> In response to Jeff:
I wouldn't expect anybody to just give me anything because I happened to have a camera that broke (that would be sweet if that was the way the world worked but it isnt). I did respond to Sean to see what he would want for it and figured I would then pass the offer on to the paper as an alternative. I figured they could choose what route they would like to take.
So to recap nothing has been given to anybody and I agree with with Jeff's reasoning. |

| ->> You could make a pretty cool photo illustration out of it. Pour some lighter fluid atop the camera and in the wooden boat, then set it ablaze. Put it in a kiddie pool in a dark studio and light it. sweet.... |

| ->> Thanks Jonathon. I have used this reasoning on myself. I was pretty close to buying a video camera I could use for my work here at the paper. In fact, I was driving to the store to buy one when i backed out on it. My thinking was my employer, who wants us to shoot more video, should be the one to park out the money for this, not me. |

->> Thought I'd share an unusual D1H story.....
A couple months ago this guy broke into my car and stole, of all things, the old D1H that I kept in my trunk as a back-up, as well as a Domke bag with some older glass in it. My insurance paid a settlement that got me something new, which was nice. Yes, apply fist to head here for leaving stuff in my trunk, I got it.... Anyway,
Funny thing though, I found out a couple weeks ago that the idiot sold the body and one of the lenses to this second-hand variety store just a couple miles away like two days after he stole it. And not only did he give his personal info when selling it, but they also got him on their security camera doing it. Apparently this guy is a lifetime small-time criminal with a few strikes already and this one might finally get him some time. I have yet to get the camera and lens back as the DA is considering using it as evidence in a trial I guess. Thought about selling it once I get it back, though I'm thinking it may just be as well to keep it as a back-up still since the value has dropped to pretty much nothing....

->> Damian,
Not to trying to burst your bubble, but if your insurance carrier paid you for property that was stolen, the recovered property would seem to be theirs. If they chose to offer it to you, expect to spend some cash. |
