Formatting and spell-checking? I use word or outlook and then copy and paste - when I worry about it at all.
Email? Anything sent to me would just get caught in my spam eliminator.
RSS feeds - I don't actively use them, even though I have a few set up to send out information about what I post on PhotoShelter. Not useful to me at all.
Display images - I've already got too many places to put my images where they wouldn't be well protected. I can just add a link from here. |

I'm speaking up because it's my community too. I don't criticize it, I utilize it. Where else can you find a group of photographers with such a setup? I like it just the way it is, it works. It is a privilege. |

As for why no inline images in this forum it would probably make for more work for those running the site as they are very wary about the posting of copyrighted material. It would be easy for someone to accidentally post a copyrighted image/video, I think some posts have been taken down in the past due to copyright of even text nature. Also video in member galleries are also subject to this if you embed copyrighted music/audio in the video.
I don't think it's wrong to talk about the forum in the forum. But suggestions to management for feature requests are best along with airing in the forum. |

->> I'm not sure turning SS into a social networking site is what this segment of the industry needs. There are more pressing issues like paying for internships (wtf), 'donating' photos to sports equipment companies who will in turn give free equipment to schools, advice on how to break into the stock photo market.
While my first post was supposed to be laced with sarcasm and silliness (the first graph of this message, too) - it appears one person got it (kudos to you - it's all love, baby - the post below are more serious.
"...format messages...."
The current format is easy to read and works with the overall visual presentation of the pages. This isn't MySpace of FaceBook (and I pray that SS doesn't turn into such a social network gobbledygook). Going through a forum with random bold or italic text, multiple fonts and other text enhancements are eyesores. The clean design that site has always had is so much easier to read and locate information quickly.
"...quote messages..."
Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V works just fine. Alan did it, I did it. It works - try it.
"...display images..."
That is what one's profile page or your personal website is for. On a more practical basis, adding this feature could increase the time it takes a thread to load.
"...make hyperlinks"
You can do this now. Ms. Miller demonstrated it in the post above.
"...and email you when someone else has replied to one of your messages..."
There is thing called bookmarking that browsers do. Bookmark the thread and check back every couple of days (or hours). Seriously, someone has time to post a message but not the time to come back and check it until they get a reply.....pleeeeese. |

->> Well written Clark.
I would though like to add the following comments.
Re: Separate forums. I don't want to have to open different sub forums or check down a long list of replies. The old robgalbraith forum had these options and I found both time consuming to use. It doesn't take long to look down a list of generally well titled threads on the Message Board as it is and open any of interest and those possibly of interest. For example I might use Canon but still keep an eye on Nikon matters either because I want to see what the equipment is capable of or the issue may have a relevance to my own photography at some point. I might be UK based but the Orphans Work Bill may well also cause major headaches for those outside the US and so seeing what action is being taken is of interest to me. I might have missed those in another system. I would estimate that in any one day there are probably at the absolute most ten threads either new or being discussed. Even after several weeks away from these pages recently I was able to quickly scan the list and pick out what I wanted to read.
Re: Displaying images. Not sure what other images anybody would want to post on a professional photographers website discussing professional photography issues that cannot be posted as an update of their own portfolio or, which would require linking to as it is somebody elses copyright.
I have looked through and been a member of several of the photography forums. Each has its own purpose but this is the only one I now bother with. It suits me the best as it also offers the opportunity to see the work of other professionals working in a similar field as me as and when I choose, aswell as the opportunity to discuss issues. For the US based it also offers workshops. Sportsshooter is actually a well designed site and worth investigating properly. Whilst its balance may not suit some I would suggest it serves the purpose required by most of its membership. To add features that will make it more timeconsuming for those running it will take them away from some of the other benefits. |

Mark, you are 100% correct. I help a friend run a "PHP" type forum site about high school sports. I am one of two administrators and we have about 15 moderators who all spend a lot of time trying to make sure posts that should not be made get taken down.
We have all the bells and whistles that Michael asked about, but those options come with a price, in man hours to keep up with it and headache's in running it.
Could there be improvements to this site made, sure. We all have wished we could edit our own posts when we go back and look at them and see what an idiot we have made of ourselves, but for the most part this site serves the purpose it was designed for. To allow photographers an opportunity to ask questions, share ideas and build relationships.
Every year when I send in my $25.00 I think of what I get out of this site for that money compared to where I spend other income for information and there is no comparison. The people behind SS do a great service just by offering what they do.
That's my .02 worth |

Everytime someone posts here, their member icon links directly to their page. It's a great place to post images and readily accessible by anyone posting on the MB.
Could there be enhancements to the MB? Sure. In the IT business, evolution is everything. In good time, I'm sure SS will make some. Will they be exactly what everyone wants? Doubt it, but it is their choice and I don't have any reason to doubt their judgement. |

The forum software on my own site, Backtalk, dates back to the 1980's, and while lots of people have asked for an upgrade, an equal number prefer to keep it just the way it is.
Personally, I don't like most of the newer forum software, as it has too many "bells and whistles" and not enough of what really counts. I really hate it when people have to read the same stuff over and over and over again because it's been "copied" so simply.
I used to wish that the software here would get updated, but nowadays I appreciate that it's a quick and effective way to get to lots of new information - and yes, every so often, to ask for help. |

Not likely.
Why? I'll go ahead and answer that one too.
Students interested in learning and veterans interested in teaching have more important things to do than to wade through threads like this one to get to the occasional gem. When the site started over six years ago, these forums were more than adequate to help facilitate the education of sports photographers. No one needed to attach a photo to a message or be notified in email of a response. Am I to believe that because we can't italicize our text or quote a previous poster that this forum can no longer fulfill its intended purpose? To quote Mr. Brooks, "pleeeeese."
I'm done. Time for a Witte-esque message board hiatus. Not that I was really saying all that much lately anyway. Wonder why...

The exact opposite. SS is the P mode of forums. I'm looking for some M mode...
Clark Brooks said, "... and why is this a necessity?"
Well, for one, it certainly makes quoting people easier. This is turn makes it easier for EVERYONE to follow the thread and who's talking about what and to whom.
Corey Perrine said, "Instead of ranting to a group of professionals who don't have their hands on the knobs of the site."
Seriously? One question is a rant? Wow... I'm speechless...
Corey Perrine said, "If you're not happy with what you have now, how could you be happy with more?"
It's not about being happy. It's about functionality. Wouldn't anyone else like to be able to hit a "quote" button and respond to a thread without having to scroll up and down the page to find who you are talking to? How about editing your message when you see you made a typo or obvious grammatical error or other error?
Diana Russsel said, "Sorry but there is entirely too much whining going on and the thread title is really snippy. "SS ever gonna get a REAL forum?" This forum is real and has been since 2002."
Whining? Wow... speechless TWICE...
The SS forum, while an excellent place to talk and having an abundance of knowledge from many different people, is rudimentary at best. I'm not whining about it. I asked a question, a rather simple one. What YOU read into it is your problem and does not indicate that you are correct.
Nigel Farrow said, "Separate forums. I don't want to have to open different sub forums or check down a long list of replies."
See, you are already missing what I'm talking about. Any REAL forum has a button labelled something to the effect of NEW POSTS. You open the site up, hit NEW POSTS, and instantly see EVERY thread posted to since the last time you logged on. Wouldn't that be nice?
Nigel Farrow said, "Re: Displaying images. Not sure what other images anybody would want to post on a professional photographers website discussing professional photography issues that cannot be posted as an update of their own portfolio or, which would require linking to as it is somebody elses copyright."
The first thing that might come to mind would be problem images. Post a thread that says "What's this stripe in my image" and hot link to the image on your website. No need to make an SS gallery that you will eventually (more than likely) have to delete thereby breaking the integrity of the thread.
Ron Hawkes said, "I help a friend run a "PHP" type forum site about high school sports. I am one of two administrators and we have about 15 moderators who all spend a lot of time trying to make sure posts that should not be made get taken down. We have all the bells and whistles that Michael asked about, but those options come with a price, in man hours to keep up with it and headache's in running it."
There is that... but I think, especially with this site, the extra man hours would be very minimal. I mean, how often do you visit other forums with real knucklheads on them and you think, "why do they get away with this behavior?" I have never, well... not often, read a post on SS and thought that. This is a great, well behaved group and the membership requirements definitely weeds out the trolls. That doesn't mean it can't be improved upon.
Alan Look said, "You say posting images in the OP. I noticed that your page hasn't been updated in almost 700 days. Are you really wanting to post images?"
Not posting images in that sense. And, yes, I'm embarrased to see how long it's been since I've updated :(
Brad Penner said, "More importantly, is SS ever gonna get back to REAL forum content or REAL forum contributors? I'll go ahead and answer that."
I'm glad a REAL contributor decided to add some REAL content...
In closing, I apologize profusely to those who thought I was bad mouthing SS. I just asked a very simple question. VERY simple question in order to both ascertain if anyone had any idea on the answer (Yes, an email to the admins may have been more appropriate) as well as to find out if there are others out there that would like to see some improvements as well (an email the the admins would not have worked for user feedback).
As noted in someone else's post the management is typically VERY responsive to user input. I'm just trying to get some input on the topic. There are some that seem to be open to the idea, others that aren't, and of course, those that just wanna attack any idea they don't get... That's life on the intrawebs.
Feel free to return to "REAL content by REAL contributors..." |

No, Michael I am not missing your point. You missed mine. With the current design I have no need to log in to find messages of interest with new posts. I just glance down the list knowing roughly the last time I looked on here so how far I need to go. Your method throws up far more messages to wade through.
Re:Displaying images
People have managed for a long time by setting up a special gallery when asking about problem images in a similar way to what Jack Howard did above. These might get taken down at some point but I would suggest so will pictures made available through a page on a persons own website.
Re:Extra man hours being very minimal.
It is easy for us all to sit and suggest these things but I do hope that those wanting any additional man hours put in will give up their time to assist.
Re:Peoples responses to this thread
I see what you want but, just like you have the right to ask, I and others have the right to say that this site works as we need. It doesn't mean people are attacking your ideas. |

Just make me lazy and can't be trusted. They need expensive batteries and I have to drive to the store to get them and that costs a lot in gas and wear and tear on my starter and clutch.(I don't trust those automatic transmissions for a minute)
I prefer to take pictures by looking at an object until I remember it fairly well, then sketching it on the walls of a cave. This method lasts thousands of years. Anything more high tech and you're just asking for trouble with your permanence. Plus you again start needing those damn batteries and other crap like lenses, model releases, gaffer tape, and Chili's gift cards.
I am grudgingly using a keyboard to type this post. I would prefer if I could enter it into the computer on punch cards, and then store the punch cards in a shoebox in my cave in case I need to enter the same thing at another time.
These are basically the kind of responses i'm seeing here, capped with the always classic, if you don't like it leave.
Because you know, sticking around and trying to change things for the better is dumb. Expecting a business to improve over time to keep up with competition, heresay. Wait I meant "heresy." lucky I am focusing and caught that since I only get one crack at it.

Than again since Chuck has asked Mr. Bridges to hunt you down ... maybe SportShooter helping you find porn would keep you from angering Mr. Liddy and we all know that at 976 years old, Mr. Liddy shouldn't be upset...its just not good for his health. |
