->> I have had one since Friday but have not had a chance to put it through any kind of real use.
Initial impressions:
1. It seems faster to boot up, attain & lock focus, & shoot.
2. It is minutely larger: it does not fit into the underwater housing that held the G9. Rats!
3. Only Canon is supporting the RAWs at the moment. Photoshop, Lightroom and Breezebrowser do not recognize the G10 CR2s.
4. ISO 400 jpgs 'seem' cleaner.
It will be a day or two before I can give it a better ride & will post back then.

->> Waiting to compare it to the new Nikon Coolpix P6000 before deciding which to plunking my money on.
We will hopefully have (Canon-willing) a shootout between these too new cool point & shoot cameras in a forthcoming Sports Shooter Newsletter.
There are a couple of other p & s I'm looking at in that price range ... but have to get my hands on them first before opening up the old wallet.
Hmmmm ... Been thinking of having a regular column on point & shoot cameras for the newsletter ... |

->> Love to ...if the company will provide a camera for the review.
It has been difficult dealing with certain companies in getting product for evaluation purposes. I would love to do more of this because so many readers want it, but I am limited by what I can get from companies.
Personally, that's just me talking, my choice is down to the Nikon or Canon... for several reasons. |

->> Can anyone recommend a good Point and Shoot that is extremely easy to use for the wifey?
I just want a point and shoot that takes really good pictures, but is very easy to use for my wife when she grabs it and uses it. |

->> G10 would fit that bill - EASY to use in the Auto or Program modes but gives you the flexibility and options you want.
I bought one 2 days ago while in HK to replace my IXUS 960IS
So far I LOVE IT!
Love the control dials (easy access to functions and exposure comp), Love the screen and the ergonomics and love the interface and the images look great.
Haven't imported the RAW's yet but planning to do that afer HK (off to Bahrain tomorrow) - Going to watch (not shoot) the Bledisloe Cup match in Hong Kong tonight as a punter.
Going to see if I can find the waterproof case for it cause that could be a lot of fun!
Best regards,
Justin |

| ->> Only held it and not shot with it but I liked the ergos and the dials on the G10 were a smart move -- few less things to have to dig through in the menus. I also like that it looks like a rangefinder. I'm gonna ask Santa for one. |

->> G10 works pretty well and is a big step up from the G9, 28mm wide angle is a great, and the controls are quite easy to access which is also nice
Downside is that its a bit bulky. Its certainly smaller than a DSLR of course, but its not really a camera you can carry in your pants pocket though.
The Panasonic is a much slimmer camera, but the zoom range is reduced. 24-60mm I belive. Faster lens at f2.0 on the wide end though.
I've also owned a Ricoh GX-1, which has a 24-70mm lens and while I do love the 24mm wide end (or 16mm with wide angle adapter), as well as its very compact pocket size, and RAW ability, 70mm full frame equiv has quite often left me wanting more reach.
The p6000 might be the best bet in terms of size/weight and reach as its 28-110 or so mm I recall reading.
Luminous Landscape had a pretty nice review of the two and the G10 seemed the hands down winner in that test.
I just find the G10's a bit much to carry as far as an always with you "pocket" camera goes |

->> Bert,
i was debating between the P6000 and the G10, my problem with the P6000 is that the RAW files from the P6000 are not supported by OSX!! The G10 CR2 Files are!! The NRW fiels can not be processed with Capture NX, or NX2!! What was Nikon Thinking about, Dissing Apple like that?? I'm a MAC and I'm buying a G10!! I'm not about to buy a Windoze machine just to process RAW Files from a $500 Point & Shoot!! I just got an "End of Life" Macbook Pro 2.5 Ghz machine from Jody at Roberts, for a great deal, these were the last of the Matte Screen Macbook Pros, Jody even made me a sweet deal ont he 4GB RAM Upgrade with matched Kingston RAM!! |

->> Have any of the G10 owners shot any raw files and tried opening them in CS3?
Last week our Canon rep brought by a 5D II for a hands on show & tell. At the same time I also demo'd his G10, including a few raw files. The JPGs open fine, but the raw files won't.
Files from both the G9 & G10 are appended as CR2. However, all I did was slip the SD card from my G9 and into the G10 without formatting in the G10. The G10 raw files open open in Photo Mechanic but not in CS3. And yes, the CR2 files from the G9 open fine in CS3.
Likewise, Adobe DNG Convertor doesn't see the G10 CR2 files either.
Any thoughts? Can there be a difference between CR2 raw files between two different cameras?
Thanks,

->> BTW, the ISO 400, 800 & 1600 JPGs from the G10 'appear' much cleaner than those from the G9. The 28mm field of view is a most welcome addition and for a P&S, the 140mm long end seems long enough for a walk around camera. Focus was fast and dead on. These impressions from about 15 minutes and a few dozen files at 200, 400, 800 & 1600; both extremes of the lens zoom range, both AWB and preset color balance. I would absolutely consider using ISO 1600 from a G10, which I won't do with my G9.
I will soon be buying one of these to replace my less than one year old G9.

->> Steve, yes. CR2 files can be different between cameras. I'm not sure exactly why but as new cameras come out, Adobe releases RAW updates:
http://tinyurl.com/63ghxj
I don't think they have released the update for the 5d2 or the G10 which is no good. |

->> I bought a G10 while in NY for PhotoPlus last week and first impressions are favorable. The camera starts up quickly and responds well with virtually no shutter delay in decent light. I have large hands and the ergonomics are fine. I like the dial controls and the mondo screen. I really, really like the manual functions. It is a bit bulky for a shirt pocket.
G10 RAW files are not yet supported in CS3/Lightroom's Camera RAW but I suspect that will change soon. I refuse to install the Canon software that comes with the G10 because I'm simply goofy that way. So, I'll wait for the Camera RAW update. Because of that, I am shooting in RAW + JPG mode which drags on the processor a little but I'm not shooting track with it so it's not a huge deal.
Files (JPG) shot at 800 and 1600 are rougher than I would like but I think our expectations are becoming slightly out of whack because of DSLR advancements. It's not fair to compare a P&S to my D3. Files shot at 400 are good. I haven't used a G9 but am told by a person I trust at Canon that the G10 is at least 1-stop better in image quality than the G9.
There are a number of great P&S's out there and this is just one of them. |

I am interested in this camera for under water usage and just to carry something other than a traditional DSLR. |

->> Like Rafael, I'm curious about the G10 as a possible underwater camera. I'm taking scuba classes for a trip next spring and don't think I can afford housing and strobes for my DSLRs right now, so I was hoping the G10 would be an affordable alternative.
If anyone ends up using it for underwater photography, I'd welcome reviews.
