FireFTP and FileZilla are my choices. |

->> Different ftp clients will have differing transfer speeds given the same connection and host.
I used to have to test that sort of thing, and so I still check to see what I get from the various file transfer software I use.
On the Mac the fastest is Interarchy, but some people don't like its interface. (It's like the Finder for the most part.) More familiar to people is Transmit, which has more eye-candy and is more visually pleasing. It's not quite as fast, but completely usable. There's also Fetch, which, along with Interarchy, are the two oldest for the Macintosh. Panic's Transmit came along 'bout the time of Mac OS X and jumped into a gap created as the two others transitioned from the old Mac OS. I use Interarchy when I need to move a lot of data, like gigabytes worth. I bought Transmit during that gap I mentioned, and because it was less daunting for my wife.

Any of these programs will do a lot more than simple FTP, and are very "hep" to what's needed for secure file movement. I regularly use SSH and SFTP connections with 'em to my hosts. |

->> I've been using FireFTP, which is a donation-ware plug-in FTP Client for Firefox. It's both PC and Mac, so you can get comfortable with it no matter what platform you are using (and I often switch back and forth). It's free to try, free to use as well, but if it makes a reasonable improvement to your workflow (and therefore livelihood) it's great Karma to make a donation.
Of course, if you don't use Firefox, the plug-in won't do you much good.

->> For Mac, I use Fetch. It seems to be very reliable and hasn't let me down in terms of speed.
For Windows, I use WS_FTP or Filezilla. No problems with those either. The last time I used WS_FTP, the interface had "classic windows" look that sometime threw me off. It felt like I was using outdated software. |

->> For the Mac I own an older copy of Interarchy but haven't updated it in awhile because I've been mostly using CyberDuck. But I finally caved and paid for Transmit (full version is the same price as the upgrade to a newer Interarchy) so I can send via NetShare and my iPhone. They're all about the same except Transmit allows for sending via Proxy set-up on the iPhone.
For the Windows side I use Core FTP LE which is free and easy to set-up and use. |

| ->> I use built-in ftp client from Photo Mechanic. For transmitting photos I don't need all those fancy features which other ftp clients have, so PM is enough for me. On top of that, it has nice feature to just "restart" failed transfers without transferring rest of batch. Normally this can be done with almost any other ftp client too (resume), unless application on other side moves photos to different place once upload is completed. In this case, resume doesn't work, since there's no files on server anymore, and it goes upload everything again. With PM's restart, I can avoid this. |

Hey, it is also pretty cool that there are so many addons these days for our workflow programs (I'm a lightroom fan) that let you export/ftp seamlessly. Not sure if it is slower on the speed, but sure is easier. |

It works well for general FTP but most of the time we use their synchronise utility - compare this directory on the laptop with that directory on the server and make sure the same files are on both. |
