D3 lens release button issue

->> From my message board searches & google searches it appears I might be the first to have this particular issue...Yesterday I was having trouble changing lenses on one of my D3 bodies. The lens release button was sticking, and upon closer inspection I found that it had popped out past its normal travel, allowing it to get hung up on the edge of the guide. Here's the best I could do to photograph the issue:

Anyone seen this before and know a home-brew remedy or is this a send-it-in issue? I don't wanna have the thing pop off completely and be stuck with a lens that can't come off. |

->> I've seen this. Just send it in if it's causing a problem...or wait to have it repaired when you have some else done, like upgrading the buffer.
It really wasn't causing me any problems so I waited. But that was me...your issue might be different.
I would not recommend using a "home remedy" on a $5k piece of equipment. For one thing you chance voiding your warranty if you damage the camera while performing this "home remedy" not to mention possibly making it worse.
Call NPS about it first. |

->> Had the same problem. Tried to live with it, but eventually the button actually fell off.
Sent it to Melville. They fixed it (free, of course) in short order.
Send it in. |

->> Just got my D3 back from NPS. Bert is right--if it's under warranty...
I guess I'm gonna steer my own thread somewhat off topic here, so please indulge me in my own digression...I filled out the NPS forms, put the "NPS Priority" stickers on the box, etc. etc. and I was somewhat underwhelmed that it took two weeks to get the camera back.
This was my first experience with Nikon service since their 2007 resurgence. For many people (like me) who did the Nikon-Canon switch when the 1D came out, the icing on the cake was ditching NPS. In my experience, repairs took far too long even IF there were parts, loaner equipment was not available even IF you could get a hold of anyone to ask about it, and more than once when I finally did receive equipment back from service I had to send it right back again because the issue was not fixed, or for some other new problem that didn't exist pre-service.
Don't get me wrong, a two-week turnaround is...Okay...but far from impressive. I just had to send in a 17-35mm lens for service. (Again on an NPS ticket) Went to the service website and it's on the dreaded "parts hold." Uh-Oh. |

| ->> The same thing happened to me on my D3 where my lens release button broke with an 80-200 zoom attached. They sent me a loaner D3 however to use. |

->> Is the D3 Lens Release button a common problem among others here?
My D3 is in for the same problem. My 80-200 was stuck on it for over an hour during a shoot. Got home, it released finally. Then a week later my 28-70 wouldn't release from the D3 camera, so it's camera body related.
I just checked my repair status online with Nikon and according to the status, they are billing me $336 to release the lens from the body and repair the lens release button.
I am quite surprised I am being charged for something that could be a design defect.
Any thoughts from others? |

| ->> I too have the lens button popped out of my D3. This has to be a defect. I have been living with it for months, don't want to be without my wonderful D3. I am out of warranty. |

| ->> Just had it happen to my Canon 5D. Such a strange button to lose. And it is looking expensive to fix... |

->> Remember, if you are an NPS Member and you need to send yur D3 in for this issue, contact NPS and get a loaner body, it is one of your membership benefits, so take advantage of this.
