OT Overused words.

->> I just watched the McCain/Palin vp thing on tv during lunch.
You know I think I'm sick and tired of Tv news people using the word "maverick."
They use the word in every sentence. I swear!
Now, not only is McCain a maverick, but now his vp pick, Palin, is also a maverick.
Besides, there is only one maverick, James Garner.
Other words that get overused imo
"look or listen." As in, look, I'm tired of people over using words like maverick.
When I hear those one of those two words, I usually stop paying attention to what the person is saying. |

Thanks for being such a maverick by pointing this out.

->> Of all the overused words so far, "change" is the one that keeps me waiting for the punchline that never comes.
Change can be a good thing, change can be exciting, change can be inspirational, and change can be the twenty seven cents you get to keep from the next dollar you make.
Change is good if change is for the better, but change is bad if change is for the worse. Tired of hearing the word "change" yet? :) |

Did you literally ignore that the only Maverick is James Garner (Mel Gibson wasn't bad as Maverick in the movie remake, which co-stars James Garner who was awesome as Rockford).

From Merriam-Webster's College Dictionary:
warrior (n) - a person engaged or experienced in warfare.
From several interviews with various athletes when asked about playing the game with one of their teammates:
"He is a warrior." |

->> Max--
Your dad sounds like my Dad who more than once advised me: "honesty isn't the best policy...it's the only policy."
With respect to this topic, I hope the word gravitas fades back into obscurity for another century or so. It's been 8 years since Cheney was selected as his VP by then Gov. Geo. H. Bush and I still can't recall any other time in my life that I have heard that word that was, back then, too often repeated.
Few things bother me as much as fifty cent people trying to impress others with the use of five dollar words. When the late Wm F. Buckley, Jr. used such verbage, I never doubted that he knew exactly what he was saying. Sadly too many talking heads on TV fail to project that same certaintude.

->> The reflexive "myself" used as a substitue for "me."
"Nick, Judy, and myself went downtown..."
I think people use that word trying to sound intelligent. How ironic!
Then there's the old favorite "general consensus." As opposed to, oh, a consensus of one. Like, a maverick.
"Karl Rove." As in anything (which may or may not, literally, exist) that is evil, mysterious, or just plain wrong yet somehow gets someone elected president.
"Certaintude" when what is actually meant is "certitude." ;)
"That's my .02" - Now, that's change I can't believe in.
Chuong - you're posting at 1 AM. You've got a long way to go...

Listen dude, to be honest, I may be a maverick, but I would like to take a vaca some day. Tons of exposure and free advertising just doesn't friggin feed my kids and myself. Ironically, they might actually find a shooter to randomly work for tons of exposure, but I'm literally going forward and am a warrior for change. But, it is what it is and at the end of the day, I will obviously be the only hero in my game plan. Just my $ .02.

I always thought a "flip-flop" was when someone had one opinion, changed their mind and then changed their mind again back to their original opinion.
When someone changes their opinion just once (supporting the war in Iraq and then saying it was wrong or supporting a "bridge to nowhere" and then not) isn't that just a "flip"? |

Any use is overuse--unless it's referring to a stand with shelves for ornaments.
As commonly used in the phrase "and whatnot," it becomes a junk word. Meaningless and without purpose, it is babble cluttering up a sentence. |

"Just Google-it" - when did a company name become a verb?
Dude, this thread's got my friggin' head spinnin'. Gonna go be a maverick and have myself a hero sammich (which is another oft-mispronounced word!)
And, I also hate the overuse of the word Random, especially since that is the name of my photography business, Random Photography! So, all you other guys/gals - cut it out!
