Olympic photog with a flag

->> Just after the medal presentation in the men's 50-meter freestyle, Michael Phelps walked in front of the photo position. The first photographer he passed in the front row tried to hand Phelps a U.S. flag and placed it back out of sight when Phelps ignored him.
Isn't this already enough of an artificial show without so-called journalists trying to stage-manage things?

->> Mark, I was there and that's not what happened. A fan in the stands threw the flag down to Phelps but it came up short. The photog reached to grab the flag on the ground to give it to Phelps but he ended up not taking it for some reason or the other.
BTW, SI's Heinz Kluetmeier has the most amazing photo of the finish. It is stunning in its brillance. Wow!

->> Also from Rod Mar:
"what happened was that a usa fan tried to throw a flag down from the stands.
"the flag fell short, out-of-reach for even Phelps' long arms.
"a photographer was trying to be helpful and hand it to him.
"phelps demurred, saying, "i'm sorry. the flag touched the ground -- i can't take it".
"it all happened right in front of me."
My apologies to the photographer.

->> Scott, that is an amazing photograph. I could no believe how close that race was and for Heinz Kluetmeier to fire off a shot at that moment is incredible.

->> I had the same thought as Mark when I saw this happen, so thanks to Scott for clearing things up with his first-hand account.
And now that we've hijacked this thread to the Kluetmeier photo:
That's what this job is all about--getting THE shot that tells the story and HK has done it again. That image may be THE photo of these games, especially if Phelps goes on to win an eighth gold. Both Phelps and Kluetmeier are amazing. |

->> Beautiful shot. Couldn't find it any larger by clicking the link, but if you right-click over the picture, Flash will let you zoom in to scrutinize...

->> First off, that race was great! For about 0.01 of a second I thought Phelps had lost. Then the graphics shot across the lanes... 1 Phelps.
That photo is killer. I bet Phelps wants one. There's a conversation piece for ya. |

->> Anybody see the end of the mens doubles tennis gold medal match? From what I could tell, a photographer ran across the court and handed something to Roger Federer, Federer took it then put it on the bench and the photographer ran back across the court and got into the well.
Anyone know what that was about?
And, oh yeah, that Phelps guy is pretty good. |

| ->> ...of course the flag incident will mean that Phelps can never run for political office! His opponent will surely pick up the story and twist it to say that Phelps refused to wave the American flag following his Olympic victory! |

->> Yes, Tom, it is great.
Did anyone see that Omega timing finally released the photo finish?
It's an overhead shot that doesnt really prove much. So much water splashing about, you can't see jack.
Underwater was the way to go. That's the image that will stick with me from these Games. |
