Attention! Photoshop CS4 coming this fall
Phil Hawkins, Photographer

->> Flash! This just in...

"...[A] new wave of applications is going to debut in the fall, Most are aimed at digital media enthusiasts and professionals, including Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom. (In fact, the next version of Photoshop will be 64-bit native for Windows 64-bit OSes only.)

Notice; 64-bit Photoshop. Obviously that refers to the operating system and not 64 bit images...

Film at 11.

Be afraid; be verrrrry afraid.

Now, I do hope it's this fall - I'm with you on that! It just doesn't necessarily say.

"(In fact, the next version of Photoshop will be 64-bit native for Windows 64-bit OSes only.)"

That statement didn't really make sense to me from the Adobe guy's blog post - my brain doesn't parse things well sometimes. The Mac version will in fact be a 32-bit version, while the Windows version will be 64-bit.

Mac 64-bit will be coming with CS5 or CS6, due to Apple's changing of some development roadmaps on 64-bit - Adobe will have to rewrite a large amount of code to adapt to a different programming interface in order to work with 64-bit.

->> Thanks for the clarification, Brian, yes, the first release will be a Windows-Only version, 64 bit for Vista. It will benefit users, as I understand it, only when using 4 gigs or higher RAM. Plus, it will make use of the graphics card memory in a way that will accelerate performance. Now, I'm not a hardware geek, but that's how I understand the new resource capabilities.

There's been rumor, speculation, etc. for months, but it seems that now a pretty solid "definite maybe" has been established for a release this fall. Some say October, but we'll have to wait and see. Also, there's reference to a CS4 beta on the net, but I went to the Adobe website and did several searches and did not find one. I think they learned their lesson on betas.

Should be interesting. Wish I put off upgrading to CS3 though...such is life with technology though.

Here's a scary feature for the journalism crowd..."content-aware" scaling or "seam carving":
"Content-aware scaling, known as seam carving from its research days, lets users change an image's proportions while protecting important areas from distortion. That's a useful option for those adapting content for small screens on mobile devices, for example."

The content aware scaling could be great for me (non-journalist) and I am really excited about the "adjustments panel"...looks like it could save everyone a lot of time in doing quick work.

I've ordered it but it's on back-order.

Anyone know when it will "really" be released?
