Selling outside of USA

->> I am not posting this to stir a negative reaction.
One I that I have noticed is a reluctance in the classifieds of people willing to ship outside the USA.

Just wondering why this is?

Personally I have bought quite few items from companies in America with no problems.

->> It's because of the relatively high number of issues with scams such as the Nigerian 419 and the fake escrow accounts and stuff like that.

(For US residents) If the person that scams you isn't located in the US you have practically ZERO chance of recovering your money or your goods.

I'm not talking about purchasing from companies like Penn Camera, Adorama, Roberts, etc. I'm talking about purchasing from individual sellers.

We have over 300,000,000 people in the US so the way I see is is why should I risk sending something half-way around the world when I can see it for cash to a guy that lives close enough to pick it up from my office/home?

Even for reputable larger companies, there are issues with shipping, VAT, taxes, customs, and all that stuff.

->> You can't get scammed if you know what you're doing, accept wire transfers only and wait to ship until the funds clear, they can't be reversed and if you only give out the proper information they can't access your account and steal your money. I suppose that once they have your account number they know where to start trying to hack, but being a photographer the only money you'll likely have is whatever they just sent you.

I avoid international shipping whenever I can because it just plain sucks. UPS is very easy to work with and get international orders out the door, but they charge and arm and a leg. USPS is much cheaper but packages can take months if not years to arrive, and there's no rhyme or reason to which forms you have to fill out, expect at least 30 minutes of filling out forms at the Post Office. Combine the cost of shipping, the time involved and the drinking problem you'll develop after an hour or seven at the Post Office and it's just not worth it.
