Weddings Shooters: How do you present DVDs/CDs?
Armando Solares, Photographer

->> To those of you who shoot weddings, how are you presenting CDs/DVDs to the couples that purchase a DVD of their wedding photos?

what kind of folio, case, album are you using? and where are you getting them from?

I've been searching online, but I haven't found something I like yet.

Any ideas or info is much appreciated.

thanks,

Armando

->> I use a really simple presentation that the couples seem to really enjoy. I go to any computer store and purchase a plastic DVD case that holds two discs. I label the discs with lightscribe and lay out an image in photoshop with the couples name and wedding date. I print the image which goes under the clear plastic. The whole setup costs about $0.50 (plus the lightscribe disc) and looks really nice and like I said, the couples seem to really enjoy the personal touch of having their photos on the DVD front and back covers and on the DVDs/CDs themselves. I also like to match the cover of the DVD case with the cover of their album if possible. I use Blurb.com for my album printing.

->> I finally got tired of Lightscribe because it took almost 20 minutes to burn and the drive I brought only durned in b/w. I finally broke down and brought a cheap Epson Photo R380 at Staples for $85.00 bucks. It prints to discs very fast with vibrant colors. I hooked it up to an Apple Base Station which also allows me to play my Itunes over my stereo in my basement studio. The discs aren't that expensive and it seems like Best Buy and Staples take turns selling them at a reasonable discount.

->> Hey Armando, I use lightscribe for the discs because I've been told that injet ink runs if it gets wet. The chances of the disc getting wet are slim, but you never know. I don't mind the 20 minutes per disc burn time. As for DVD cases, I found this cool place called Meritline.com they have great prices on all kinds of supplies. I bought a package of double DVD cases (2 DVD's inside) and a package of single DVD cases. When I purchased, I got free shipping because I spent a certain dollar amount. Here's the link:

http://www.meritline.com/2-disc-load-black-w-full-sleeve-dvd-case.html

I use the 14mm thick ones as opposed to the 9mm thick ones. They also have CD's, DVD's lightscribe media, inkjet media, burners, and many, many other things. They have inserts if you want to get really fancy, but I just print using photo paper. I like matte photo paper, but I've used glossy too. Then I select some photos and make a nice cover using my inkjet printer. I give it a title like: Dick and Jane's Wedding Celebration, June 4, 2008. I put the front-and-back cover insert inside the plastic on the DVD case. My clients love them!

Eric, I don't know if this helps, but I use a LaCie d2 DVD +- lightscribe writer using Toast Titanium 7. It's worked well so far. I use a mac PowerBook G4 laptop on OS 10.4.11 This burner uses the firewire 400 instead of USB which gives it added speed.

->> Eric,

Sorry I can't help you, I'm using a PC for lightscribe. For what it's worth, I use SureThing Labeler.

->> I don't have a CD/DVD printer or a Lightscribe burner so I'm considering using pre-printed CDs and I'm wondering if anyone knows of a good place to either:
1. Have CDs and DVDs with my logo and contact information custom printed (I'm not printing CDs frequently enough to justify the cost of a dedicated printer) or
2. Buy pre-printed CDs/DVDs that have a wedding theme already silkscreened on them (I wish 5inch.com had wedding stuff).

->> A company called Cyprus makes some pretty nice folios for discs that you can insert along with a picture on the adjacent page. They are kinda pricey, but pretty nice and make an impression.

http://www.cypressalbums.com/folios.php

You have to register with them to get the prices, but I can tell you they are high quality and different from most of what I have seen other photographers offering in case you were looking for something out of the ordinary.
