Blown Shutter???

->> Is this what a damaged shutter will do to an image?
http://www.sportsshooter.com/mpalmieri/shutter/index.html
I was clicking along fine today and then at one point, I chimpped an image and noticed that bright band across the middle. The camera never gave an error warning or anything out of the ordinary. However, that line is in every frame.
As always, your collective wisdom is appreciated.

| ->> My MkII did the exact same thing a few weeks ago while shooting a theatrical production. Fortunately, I got enough good frames before it started doing that. I actually thought it was the lighting in the theater and ignored it. Then, I did some head shots for an actor using strobes and they came out perfect. So I figured, everything's fine. Next, I had to fly out to Manhattan to do a magazine cover shot. Just to be safe, I shot off a few frames (in ambient light) and found the white streaks! Oh crap! Now what do I do? It was worse at 1/60 to 1/250 second shutter speeds. So I tried shooting with strobes again (no ambient lighting) and they came out fine. Well, I didin't have enough time to get the camera fixed before the cover shoot, so I took my old 1D along as a backup and prayed for the best. The MkII got through the shoot fine since I was using strobes only in a studio, but as soon as I got home I shipped it off to Canon-Irvine for repair, along with a CD of sample images. The bill was $195 and the camera should arrive back on Tuesday. That's less than I thought for a new shutter, so I don't know what the actual repair consisted of, since the estimate they email you doesn't actually say what they repair. |

->> If you send it to Irvine, hopefully you'll have good luck like I did.
I've never experienced a blown shutter till about a month ago. I got the "The White Streak of HELL."
The count was at 85K (MK llN) and Canon replaced it free of charge since it had a low shutter count.
So I can say thanks to SSA III, where I learned to "Shoot the Frame of Action," and not hope to get a "motor drive shot which is hit or miss." If it wasn't for that, the shutter count might of been well over 200k. |

->> Thanks for the confirmation -- I figured it was the shutter.
I will send mine to the NJ facility since I am in state. I anticipate nothing but a good experience (fingers X'd)
I am not certain how many clicks I have on my camera. I think it's about 110K. I'm sure Canon will tell me the exact number.
Thanks again.

| ->> Michael - I just got my Mark II back from CPS NJ earlier this month. Had the same problem; a blown shutter (and at only 68,000k clicks as confirmed by Canon). Sent it in 2-day on a Saturday, shot my assignments with it again that Thursday. The bill was around $260 including tax and return shipping. If they don't tell you the shutter count when you get it back, just email them - they ignored my initial request with the repair order, but emailed it afterwards. |

->> I just got my MkII back from CPS on Friday for that very problem - except in addition to the white band across the middle, the last few frames actually show a blown out piece of the shutter.
CPS turned it around in 3 days - $264. |

->> Michael,
You won't get an error message until the shutter is so bad it hangs the whole camera up. See you over there at Canon, both of my Mark II's are going in for new shutters this week before they blow out. |

| ->> I don't know why my repair bill only came to $195 for what is obviously a bad shutter (at only 65k actuations), maybe Canon Irvine charges less? I hope they really did replace the shutter, but I'll know in a few days. |

| ->> I just sent in a 20D that didn't blow out, but just kept repeat firing when turned on. CPS charged me like $230 fixed it and also completely replaced the exterior of the body. At first I thought they sent me a complete new camera until I seen the camera straps bracket had wear and then I checked the serial numbers to see it was my body, just in a brand new shell. |

->> Bad news; yes, blown shutter, looks just like mine did.
Good news; the replacement shutter will be a super-dooper one purported to be good for 300,000 actuations. Plus, they will calibrate, inspect, clean and adjust everything. The repair facility in Anaheim is great! I realize you will send your's to one on the east coast, but out here Canon repair has been very good to me. |

I need to FEDEX out that body ASAP!
Anyone know the address off hand?
Thanks in advance.

I guess that's the difference; I'm not CPS. The guy on the phone said not to send it in w/o getting a case number first. |

| ->> I just got my MkII back from Canon-Irvine yesterday. The invoice said they replaced the broken shutter and did other adjustments/cleaning. They charged $195 for labor and nothing for parts. I guess I could look at that as getting a new shutter for free:) |

->> Haha! Free! Silly photographer ...
Seriously, I just got my e-mail estimate for a total of $264.29.
$232 in labor (with FREE parts :-)
$16.24 in tax (7% to the man here in NJ)
$16.05 in shipping
I hope to have it Monday. The holiday screwed things up. Canon received the camera on Wednesday. |
