| ->> In a fit of despondence over a bad baseball game my canon 400.2.8 (series II) leapt off my shoulder the other night in an apparent lens-icide attempt. All kidding aside, when I sent I to Canon for repair (overnight as I am leaving for Alaska Sunday) I was told that it was "past its service life". Does anyone know of a place that might be able to fix said lens? I appears as if only the mount ring was damaged as the body attached took the brunt of the impact. By the way, the body in question is a geriatric (technillogicaly speaking) original 1D which was repaired for $300. Go Figure. |

They have done well by me, on shutters and CF compartments.

->> CRJ - Canon Repair Japan, out of Atlanta, is another facillity that handles equipment CPS won't work with. I've heard nothing but good stories about them, but have not used them myself.

Good luck.

->> I've had great service from Midwest Camera Repair located in Wyandotte, Michigan.
I needed some work done to my EF 400mm 2.8. They were recommended to me by one of the tech reps in Itasca. Great service. Fast. Ray the owner is a great guy.

->> Check with Steve at Horizon in NV. I just got my lens's back, he did a good job and is more than happy to discuss your lens issues in length.

->> I just found out that my 17-35 2.8 was no longer serviced by CPS, and sent it to Strauss Photo Technical Service in DC for repair, as they were on a list of recommended third party shops provided to me by CPS, and it has been a total nightmare.
They received the lens on 4/7 it took them a week and a half, three emails, and two phone calls just to give me an estimate on the repair (replace the focus ring). According to them, this didn't solve the soft focusing issue and they couldn't find another part (wouldn't tell me what that part was) to fully repair the lens. So after a month of having my lens in house, and giving me the runaround I received a call yesterday that they were going to ship it back un-repaired, however I would have to pay $60 in bench fees and shipping charges. Little did they know, that wasn't going to happen. Ended up having to come out of pocket $20 for UPS ground shipping return (funny since I sent it in via 2 day FedEx for $12).
When I get the lens back I'm sending it to CRJ to see if they can do anything about it, as it seems they have a better reputation. Lesson learned, thankfully I have a backup lens for the 17-35, and I've been able to make due, just wanted to give a fair warning so no one else has to go through what I just did. |

->> Tom:
Can Canon's Brian Matsumoto in Chicago get you a loaner in the meantime? He's always been helpful to us.

| ->> TF Camera Repair Service in East Brunswick New Jersey, 732-238-8806, is very good. Toshio, the owner, is a former CPS repair tech. He worked on my "past service life" long glass last year. He did good work, was quick, and charged a fair price. |

| ->> The lens is still in my garage in need of merely a mounting collar to be operational but since the powers that be at Canon deem my lens to be beyond it's service life I was forced to purchase a new one. I have been meaning to see if I can just find a collar for it and sell it but out of site out of mind i guess. |
