->> So, as a HS Journalism teacher I recently received an preview copy of a new textbook we're considering adopting...and who's on the cover but our very own Robert Hanashiro. He's also featured on a full-page profile as part of the book's "Real People Real Careers".
At the bottom of that page one of the questions to review his profile is "What is Hanashiro's description of a great photo?"
Based on your SS news/board reading, any quesses on the answer to this question? (I'll post the answer after the thread fills with some thoughts...) |

HA! That's my dream of my best photo. I need to hire a digital retoucher. (See the New Yorker Pixel article on another thread.) |

->> I am sure it's Bert - in fact it's a headshot captioned with his name, so I'm fairly certain it's him. The text is titled "Exploring Journalism and the Media" from Cengage Learning. I plan to use bits and pieces from it, and am impressed it has chapters including "Law and Ethics of Mass Communication" and "Organizing Your Multimedia Effort" to go along with the basic design, quotations, interviewing skills etc. I will combine this with the AP Style guides we already use to hopefully produce at least a few kids with some real-world knowledge...
Any more thoughts on the great photo question? |

According to the interview, Hanashiro says a great photograph "makes you look at it a long time. It makes you think. It makes you emotional, whether it's a laugh, a tear, or it makes you angry...There is a big difference between 'taking a picture' and telling a story with a picture. I see way too many button pushers out there, people who can utilize the technology like auto-focus, auto-exposure, 10-frames-per-second motor drives and zoom lenses. But as far as I know there isn't a 'decisive moment' button on these new high-tech cameras" |
