Why does this forum hate Canon and PC's?
Luke Trottier, Photographer

->> The more I read these forums the more I’m astonished by the amount of Nikon and Mac users hyping their gear. What troubles me the most is 90 percent of the people reading the forum may not have the same experience as the pro’s posting and might actually believe some of this nonsense hype. A quick glance through this forum and one would derive the following.

1. Everyone with a PC probably has a virus or will have one shortly, they are not pros.
2. Everyone shooting with a 1D Mark3 has AF issues
3. PC’s are slower and more limited when it comes to Desktop Publishing
4. Canon now has poor ISO performance
5. Mac’s don’t crash, PC crash daily

Unfortunately none of this is the case, PC’s will perform the same tasks as a Macintosh and can be just as reliable and safe if the user can restrain from installing World of Warcraft and their favorite file sharing applications.

Yes you can hit a moving targets with a Canon 1D Mark3 and ISO 3200 looks amazing on this camera. Owning a company that sells both images produced by Nikon’s D3 and Canon’s 1D Mark3 let me say they both look about the same printed on 8x10 sheets at 3200 ISO.

I’m done ranting.. Thanks!

->> Luke,

I am a Canon / PC guy too, and while there has never been any love here (or anywhere I know of ) for Microsoft, Bill Gates or PC’s, I think there has been sufficiently representative amounts of Canon hype and Nikon bashing…just not lately.

I did spend quite a bit of time using a Mac this year, and it is a lot more fun until you actually have to start doing some work, then it is pretty much the same. I haven’t taken the time to figure out how to really use a Mac mouse, so I use an MS mouse and gain the ability to ‘right click’ and I am happy. When I need to be productive – unlike now – I get on a Windows PC.

When I am on my Mac, I believe I am much cooler and therefore more appealing – probably irresistible to members of the opposite sex. However when I found out Apple downgraded the display from 8 bit to 6 bit on the model I bought even though the specs on Apple’s site list the displays for all models as the same ‘millions of colors’ with no way to really discern a difference, I wanted to kick that Mac guy in the crotch and call Drew Barrymore and let her know what he is really all about.

I just have to say out here in the real world I've watched AP staffers almost pull their hair out because the powers that be demand they use dell pc's. some of them even use their own personal macs for work because there is nothing worse than a computer that crashes on deadline. those of us using mac's don't experience the crashes they do. excuse those of us who work on a deadline news situation. I don't think giving advice like this is disingenuous. I think you're 90% is more than a little off base.

Max, unfortunately PC has been adopted to mean a computer with Windows installed on it. A boxen is a computer with Linux/Unix installed on it and a Mac is a computer produced by Apple.

However that being said I do notice apple fans being a little too enthusiastic... (IE: someone asks for Window's tips there are at least 2 "get a mac" replies.

As for the Canon hate.... I don't think it's too much more than in the past. Just now all the Nikon users seem to still be in the honeymoon phase with the D3 & D300, meaning there isn't much to complain about, which just leaves us unhappy Canon users. Dig through the archives and you'll see rants about banding problems with the original Canon 1D, or soft images with the 1D Mark II, that in some cases have remarkable similarities to the current complaints about the Mark III...

Was a year ago nobody here liked Nikon. Nothing Nikon did was good enough. Nikon couldn't even shoot 10 fps! Imagine that.

As far as disliking Intel Windows machines verses Intel OSX machines, well Apple has done a lot of things right for a very long time. Doesn't mean I hate the Dell laptop with XP that I also own.

What I really hate is Norton's system tools and anti-virus software. Turned my Dell into a snail. Never did anything good for my older OS9 Macs, too.

->> Luke, there's a lot of hate on the internet. Period.

People reading and contributing to threads need to take them for what they're worth. If shooting Canon works well for you, and you've never had issues with your PC, that's great. Don't let threads that "bash" Canon make you toss up your arms and quit using what works for you.

What these threads do are spread information based on experiences of individuals. Some experiences are good, some are bad. Some are light-hearted and funny, others are serious. But readers have to use their own judgment.

I've had relatively good luck with my Canon, but I take information from these threads and store it in my mind for the future. When I go to upgrade, I can remember that scores of pros had AF problems with the Mark III, and others have had rotten luck getting Canon's corporate office to admit that there's a problem. When I go to buy a new laptop, I'll take into consideration that Mac's are less likely to crap on me when I need their performance the most.

Some threads piss me off too, but I'm not going to live my life according to someone's rant. I will take their advice and experiences into consideration, though.

And some posters on this thread are correct. It wasn't long ago that Nikon was at the receiving end of the negative remarks.

->> After years of saying, 'My PC works as well as your Mac', I just made the switch to the Mac world about 2 months ago.
No more locking up.
No more having the machine going into la la land while I impatiently wait for it to return.
No more anti-virus software (I think the anti-virus software was my biggest cause of grief in the PC world)
I spend less time fighting the machine, and more time doing what I need to do.
My only complaint on the Mac: Photo Mechanic pretty much SUCKS on the Mac when working with large files, or networked files, compared to the PC.
I'm on a Mac, and I ain't going back, JACK!

Being a Nikon guy, I do think it's funny reading all the 'I switched to Nikon threads'. My, how times have changed. The funny thing is, it will swing back soon enough. Personally, if I were a Canon guy, I'd rather stick with the MK IIn until a great replacement comes out, than spend all the money and grief switching back and forth. That's too rich for my blood!

->> You should have heard me when Nikon first came out with the D2h. Nikon blew it with that camera, bad! And there was no excuse for it. I loved the camera but hated the sensor chip. I shot with that camera for years (seemed like centuries) so I have a right to those feelings.
Now with the D3 and D300, things have turned around at a time when people are complaining about Canon's new camera.

As for #5, Mac's rarely do crash. (I wouldn't say never)
As for #1, Mac's don't have viruses. If they ever do get one (okay, when) it will never be the problem it is with windows.

I'm not saying Windows doesn't work. If you've done your homework with viruses and are prepared, then great. Keep using what your use to. There is a learning curve with switching over along with the cost of new or cross-grading software.

I use what works best for me and makes my life and my job easier.

I wouldn't say I hate Windows machines, but all I know is, in fifteen years of owning Macs, I've never had malware, spyware or a virus. How many Windows users can say that? I constantly see my co-workers bringing their Windows machines into the tech department for full software overhauls and problems that they can't fix themselves. Conversely, I've never had to take my Mac in to a tech for anything other than a hardware fix.

Same goes for camera gear. I use whatever works best for me.

You should do the same and not worry about what other people think or say.

Thank you for pointing out that gross error in terminology. I know us old farts never tire of having our errors pointed out to us and being ridiculed by a young whippersnapper! : )

Anyway thanks to you I now know the correct usage and won’t make that mistake again. I mean now that you have pointed this out to me it seems obvious that anyone who would call a Windows based laptop or desktop a ‘PC’ doesn’t know much about today’s technology, and I would never trust them for advice in the computer arena.

After thinking about it, (takes me a while because I’m old) I may know why so many make this intolerable blunder….there are these commercials…maybe you’ve seen one…they’re not on very often…not sure what they are for….where this really cool – laid back guy comes out and says ‘I am a Mac,’….and then this really nerdy uptight guy comes out and says ‘I am a PC.’ I would never buy anything from these guys.

->> Actually, Max, PC is a Windows based machine. IBM used to name their machines with this moniker, PC-XT, PC-AT, etc. They were, however expensive and other companies, Dell, Gateway, HP, etc, began making PC "clones", machines that ran the same operating system, but that were less expensive than the IBM's. The term PC stuck to all Windows based machines, because it was an easy term to use to refer to them.

Of course, what do I know? I'm just an old fart like Rich.
