Stop Action Sports MLB roster not working
Steve King, Photographer

->> Has anyone had recent success with the MLB roster function on the Stop Action site that Mike Stone set up? All I get is a blank roster with only team names at the top of the text file. I've sent an email to Mike about this already yesterday, and since it's still not working I'm slightly concerned. Man, this is almost like the dark ages since I've had to edit my own rosters, GASP!

Perhaps Jason Watson is willing to add the other leagues to his site, his college basketball script makes life so easy a well.

I know that it is supposed to be real easy to create the txt file but it is really nice to just go to one site that has the script that pulls it from ESPN.

photo mechanic should add the script to their software.

The NHL code generation works fine FWIW.

Mike, your fans await your help!

->> Thanks Dennis, I would expect it's the ESPN roster issue rearing its ugly little head again. I thought something looked different there when I looked at the format so I'm not surprised.

I also agree with Louis that this kind of thing added to PM would be huge. Being a former techie I know it wouldn't be to bad to write, just dealing with issues like Mike's script is going through is the hardest thing.

My hand built rosters will last me for a little while until ESPN fixes their mistakes and Mike's script works again. Fingers crossed!

->> It's pretty easy to make your own code replacement files. I can have a whole team done in less than 10 min and often do them before a game. I highly suggest you guys learn how. For MLB I grab the 40 man roster and all the coaches. If there is someone new or a number changes, I edit it throughout the season.

His script is nice, but I'm not a big fan of the multiple variables. Too much to remember and not my normal captioning style.

Steve, do you need one for Detroit?

Chris

->> Chris,

I pretty sure most people here how to do this manually. Most of us were performing this task ourselves long before Mike Stone put together his little applet.

Personally, I used to cut and past manually from the ESPN roster pages and this is how I'll do it if Mike's routine isn't fixed before Monday (my next MLB game).

Having said that, though, saving even 10 minutes (especially when you're covering something with a lot of "international" names, like hockey or soccer) on the front end, and doing so with a high degree of accuracy can actually save you a lot of time during post.

And I like the option of including team names, positions, numbers, etc. in the captions at my option. Being able to customize your captions on the fly is more difficult to add to a manually-compiled roster list, but Mike's files do this automatically.

->> Give a man the text file and he has one for the day, teach the man how to create a text file for code replacement and he can create his own all season.

Anybody want to share how to create the text file for the code replacement? I have spent over two hours now trying to figure it out, been to the camera bits forums and here on the boards created the text file etc.. but it does not work!! I am probably missing something really simple like a comma instead of a tab or space, but I have no idea..

Any assistance is appreciated.
Thanks.

->> Okay, I think I got it.. I read this http://www.sportsshooter.com/news/1951
and it cleared up what I was not doing correctly, I was not hitting the enter button after each entry, I was hitting tab only.

Anyone know how to create an applet like what Mike Stone and Jason Watson's does that pull the info from ESPN?

Highly agreed. I'm a copy and paste person myself.

Louis, you have mail.

->> I've created mine by doing several mass replacements on a generic text file. I like to have the whole complete file that Mike's applet creates so I have 2 or 3 options for writing the caption. Once I have the first team roster done, in about 20min, the changes are easy. I started with the roster grab from ESPN and go from there. I have the Tigers, Royals, White Sox, and I now have several others, thanks Chris!

I start with something like this below,

det Detroit Tigers

detX Gary Sheffield
pdetX DH Gary Sheffield
tdetX Detroit Tigers Gary Sheffield
tpdetX Detroit Tigers DH Gary Sheffield
detXn Gary Sheffield
pdetX1n DH Gary Sheffield #X
tdetXn Detroit Tigers Gary Sheffield #X
tpdetXn Detroit Tigers DH Gary Sheffield #X

Then with one window open showing me the whole roster I need (copied off ESPN site), and this window up in front I paste as many of these blocks as needed into the new file, do two wholesale replacements that give me the correct team name and then the shortcut. Second, I then change/replace names one block at a time, then one pass each for each position description too. I did all three of mine in about 45-50min. This is the kind of logic your applet would use to route through the data and build it like Mike's did.

Does that make sense and help anyone create their own?

Thanks for taking care of this. Man, if I could I'd buy you a beer (or two or three) I would.

Only from doing two MLB games manually this past week did I realize once again how great your script is.

I heard him explain it last month and I couldn't believe how easy it is. just a thought.

Thanks Mike for getting us all on board with the code replacements and making it so simple.
