OT: Camera RAW - CS3 - Loss of Saturation HELP!
Patrick Fallon, Student/Intern, Photographer

->> Hi All,

Been trying to figure this one out for a while now. When I open up a 1D MkIIN [Or many other RAW files] RAW File in Adobe Camera RAW, I get a massive loss of saturation, especially in the reds and oranges, sometimes if I spend enough time working on it, I can get a similar look as the JPGs, but often, there is nothing I can do to fix it... and I end up with an image that is not like the actual scene. Big Problem with the Red and Oranges.

Here is my example, a great sunset the other day here in CoMO, one is the embedded JPG, the other is a screenshot of the raw window.

So, bottom line is: How can I get it so when I open up a CR2 File in CameraRAW, it will look like the JPG? Is it even possible with Photoshop?

All is set to Adobe RGB [JPG, CameraRAW, and Camera]

Thanks!
Patrick

->> Patrick,
It looks to me like your overall contrast is down in the raw image. Try just bumping up your contrast level.

->> Hi Les,
Thanks for the advice. The contrast does need to go up, but it does not solve the problem.

Have tried that, as well as just adding saturation and/or vibrance... but I end up with a very strange orange ring around the sun, unlike that of the JPG...

Don't have my disc for DPP right now, just emailed CPS to see if they could give me a download of it since it is not on their website :/

Any other ideas?
Thanks

->> Looks like a color space conflict to me. Make sure both are either sRGB or Adobe RGB.

Otherwise, stop using CR. I have never understood why people use it. Go with Capture One v4. Best converter out there (if you can stop it from crashing).

->> Patrick, there could be lots of things different- color temp, brightness, saturation, etc. ARC by default tries to auto-correct which is almost always wrong. Most likely you need to lower your brightness and saturate the reds a little.

We could spend all day trying to guess the correction formula but the bottom line is you need to buy "Real World Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop CS3" and study up on raw. Also, I highly recommend the D-65 seminar when they come to town.

->> What settings do you have in the camera for the jpeg image? I don't shoot jpeg with the MkIIN so I haven't seen this before.

->> I use Photo Mechanic and the previews from my RAW files look great. They are building the previews from the embedded preview JPEG. When I go to edit the images in Photoshops RAW conversion, they looked flat and unsharp. I ended up downloading several RAW conversion applications and testing them out. Boy what a difference. Of the ones that I tried, Photoshop's RAW was the worst. I have recently bought Lightroom and like it. My workflow has slowed down but my images look sooooooooo much better. I do not know what makes them all different but give several a try and see what you find out.

Exactly Wesley!

Thanks for the advice. :)

If I recall, it was set at Standard Picture Style.
