Buying a D3 used?
Daniel Brayack, Photographer
Charleston | WV | USA | Posted: 6:08 AM on 03.31.08
->> I notice that on a major reputable photography site, they have a D3 (used) - but a 10 for $250 less than retail - is there any reason NOT to get it?

Will I lose warranty information? Any past bad experiences? Thoughts?

Thanks

-Daniel

->> I'd spend the extra $250 for peace of mind. Failing that, check if it is a grey market item, how many actuations it has had..... seriously, you don't know where it's been, or what it's been subjected to. Saving $250 on such a big purchase isn't such a saving.

I bought my D300, not even opened out of the box, because the buyer changed their mind. I saved myself about $800.

Yes. Nikon will only warranty the original purchase.

->> If you're talking about the one that was B&H, I noticed that it was listed as "imported". So no USA warranty, and probably no way to get Nikon USA to ever work on it. For a difference of $250, pass.

->> Well, it doesn't say "imported" now, but it did the other day. Maybe not the same camera?

In any case, $250 isn't enough of a price difference to convince me to buy used.

->> Daniel: If you're an NPS member you can get expedited shipment of a new D3 through a dealer. Got mine a week after I ordered it through Jeff Snyder (a long-time Sports Shooter member and supporter) at Adorama. You place the order, then send NPS the order information. They put you on a priority list and ship it to the dealer with your name on it.

Jeff was a great source for equipment when he was at Penn Camera in Washington and he continues to support pros at Adorama. It's best to consider SS supporters like Jeff or Jody at Roberts, Louis at Samys or Jim at Penn. They also offer discounts for SS members.

->> Daniel,
I almost bought one from a friend for $4000 when they weren't easy to get (or so I thought) but everyone here talked me out of it, which I have to say THANKS. For only $1000 more I would wait and get a brand new one.
Call B&H-I called them last week and they had several in stock and it was shipped out the next day. I think they told me they get 7 in each week and not all are spoken for. Get a new one with a warranty.

.....naw, seriously, you'll be happier with a new one, just from peace of mind if nothing else.

->> Ha - Thanks Michael.

Debra, thanks for getting back to me via email; I'm going to go for "New." if I can find one.

I phoned both B&H and Adorama - both said to call back later to see if there are any in stock. I'm in the application process for still NPS, so I may just have to catch B&H (I didn't even get "D3" out and Adorama said at least 6 weeks maybe more.)

Jeff - I'm not in NPS yet, but do you get good shipments in weekly as well?

-Daniel

->> Daniel, check with Jody at Roberts Imaging. Mention that you belong to Sportsshooter, and have applied to NPS.

->> Wish I could say the same for the value of NPS membership and people who 'support pros.' When the D300 came out and I was looking for someone to place an NPS priority order for me, my email to a longtime sportshooter member was ignored.
