->> Hey guys, I'm assuming this is my shutter on the way out, but wanted to make sure before we send it to CPS.
http://www.sportsshooter.com/kevincox/whatisthis/
It is a Canon EOS 1D Mark II N bought new in November 2006 with less than 50,000 actuations on it.
Thanks for your thoughts. |

->> Kevin,
My D2H did the same thing. Nothing but a sliver of light coming through when the shutter was out. Off to CPS I say. Even if it wasn't the shutter, that is something that needs to be looked at. |

->> Kevin most likely that is what the problem is. A better test is to take the camera outside and fire a long burst. If you are having a shutter leaf stick or the shutter itself is sticking it will show up somewhere in the burst. The other possibility is that the either the main or sub mirror isn't fully swinging out of the way.
I had that happen to me last year and 2 weeks after NPS replaced the mirror assemblies the shutter blew. In my case if you took the lens off the body and fired a burst you could see that the mirror was only flipping up 3/4 of the way. I actually shot the last period of a hockey match holding the camera upside down! Gravity was enough to close the mirror the last 1/4 of its travel. Took some explaining to the shooters though. |

| ->> Yep, mine did the exact same thing at the very beginning of football season last year. Pleasing. Blown shutter definitely. |

Looks like it to me.
My 1Ds is fine to 1/1000, after that I see the shutter more andmore in the frame, the frame is black at 1/8000
MidState Camera Repair in Warwick, RI (www.midstatecamerarepair.com) can turn the camera around in under a week if they know it is coming (call first) and it's about $275 for Canon certified folks there o fix it. |

->> To round this thread out, I got the body back from Canon today. They report it had 42,965 actuations on it and concluded that "the shutter did not operate properly." They replaced the shutter and mirror stopper and made "other electrical adjustments." Best of all they didn't charge us for the repair and had it back in under a week.
Thanks for the great work Canon West Coast Factory Service Center! |
