Anyone ever bought a pro body thru Craig's List?

Says he/she is selling a Mk II body, light usage- "Mint Condition" and the original owner.
Comes with all the usual, along with a tripod, case, 2GB card, lens (135mm 2.8 or 28-135mm f/?), but doesn't mention shutter count or actually include a photo with the serial.
All for $1000? Sounds like either they don't know what it's actually worth, or it's stolen gear. Thoughts anyone?
If it's legit, I'm going to snap it up in a second. |

| ->> Also a Speedlite in the deal, doesn't say if it's a 550 or 580... either way, it all sounds fishy. Doesn't even leave a name or number, just lists everything. |

->> I agree with Jeff that you won't be able to be sure without checking with the police. But the problem may be which police to check with, since if this is an organized group, they could be transporting the goods from far, far away.
I have seen similar things in the Craig's List (CL) postings in my area, and while I have asked for more info, haven't gotten any response.
I wonder if it's someone trying to collect email addresses, rather than trying to sell anything at all.
I have bought a few things from CL (an inexpensive used car, a used consumer vid-cam and a such stuff) but never anything as expensive as a camera.
With the prices I've seen here and on eBay for a Mark II (which I'm saving for myself) I'd be very nervous about buying one for that price. |

->> Hey Mike,
I have seen several ads like this recently, I replied about one for Nikon and it was a scam. The guy claimed to have just moved to the UK so you had to send the money to some unknown company who would then act as a go between and send you the gear. I googled the company and there are tons of comments about the scam. There was one in the Spokane listing yesterday for a D2X again but it disappeared quick.

->> Careful on Craig's List. I recently found a guy going by the name of Stan Sherwood selling cameras on Craiglist from the UK. Complete fraud. Something about using a "safe" service that is provided by Royal Mail. I checked with Royal Mail and the service he was recommending does not exist.
I'll buy anything as long as they are willing to use Paypal.
Mike, did Stan move to the UK? That's his story and its a FRAUD!! |

->> Well, looks like "Stan Sherwood" is back in the USA. He had an ad on CL for a Nikon D2X, 18-200 VR lens and 16Gb card, all for $1,000.
He sent me the following email when I asked about it:
"I still have the Nikon gear. I'm located in Hellena MT ( i have the gear with me), if you're still interested in the
sale please let me know and maybe we can work something out. So drop me a line if you're up for grabbs!" |

->> Scam, scam, scam.
But...while many people might diasgree, I say that there's no harm in at least emailing them. There's always a slim chance that someone who knows absolutely nothing about cameras received it through an estate or something, and just wants it gone. When I was in high school, we got a D1 for free because a woman called us and said "my husband passed away - I have this camera; I don't know how old it is or if it's worth anything, but you can have it if you'd like." My teacher met with her, saw what it was and told her that it was actually extremely valuable (it was only a year or two old), and she said we could still have it anyway.
Moral of the story: hey, you never know. If you can't meet them and get the product in your hand, absolutely, 100% stay away. If you can meet, the only thing you'll likely have to worry about is stolen merch - I'm sure a quick call to the right people with the serial number can help verify that.
That said, I found a sweet deal on an XL2 on Craigslist. Local picked offered - at least, so the ad claimed. I sent them an email with a few questions on the condition, if it was still available, and where I could meet them to pick it up. Response:
"Hi,
First of all I want to apologize for this late reply but I was not able to reach to a computer because I had some problems that I had to take care of.
I'm located in the United Kingdom. We could use a third party to work between us for safety. I have found a way complete the deal safely and fast, and in this way you will receive the unit in less than 2 days, if you move fast as well. The solution is provided by a company called TNT which is very similar to Fedex, DHL or UPS, which will handle the payment and delivery of the unit, that will allow you to pay for the unit only after you will receive it and through this way you will see it and test it before I receive the money. Like I said, I will pay for a 2 days delivery so you will receive the unit right away.
If you are interested please let me know.
Thanks"
Yeah...I'm interested....I'll wire the money as soon as the camera arrives. |

->> A MKII for a thousand bucks....
Most likely a fraud or maybe even stolen from one of the good guys right here on SportsShooter who worked and saved for the chance to buy it in the first place. |

->> I have been very lucky with Craigslist.
here in NYC, there seems to be A LOT of pro shooters who are in a rush to get rid of what they have to upgrade.
For instance, after years of my Canon husband using my Nikons, 2 months ago I got him a Canon deal I could not pass up:
A Mark2N with 20k actuations
70-200 2.8
28-70 2.8
580EX
550EX
540 flash
all in exc condition, just back from Canon, for $3000
so--you never know.
Today-we got a Pelican 1510 case for $50.
I bought one D70 from a great SS member (hi Ron) for $175 and 3 more on Craigslist for $200 (I have been buying them to give to students)
In 2002, I bought an F3 HP-P (very few made) for $200.
so--you never know |

I got an email back from. Almost word for word. I guess he moved back to the UK.
Debra, if you ever come across a deal like that again, let me know first! That's a heckuva great bargain! |

->> I've found a really quick way (not 100% accurate, but useful method) to determine if it's even worth reading.
Check the Location on the item. If it actually lists a city or township, the ad might be worth reading. If not, it's 99% of the time a falsie. I know most local folks who post always put their location. I know it helps sell too if people know where you are at.
The people who are posting camera gear (cars, electronics, etc) at bargain prices (but not always too low, but at a sweet price point) tend to shift around to various cities and post this garbage (not all, and random, so it's hit-or-miss). I couldn't believe how much time I was wasting verifying the prices against fair market value until I realized everytime I'm comparing a fake posting.
Again, a simple method only, but does save time!
There are legitimate pro bodies from time to time posted, but it's typically a person switching gear or upgrading...and never the newest stuff. |

| ->> No but have done a trade with two pro canon bodies. the only thing was that it was tough because we had to meet at half point each driving 1 hr and met at a gas station. It was like we were doing a drug deal or something. Other wise it was pretty simple we came up with a meeting spot, made a couple emails to one another, and a lot of phone calls ( long distance) :( I curious i traded a canon 5d for a canon 1d Mark ii N. |
