->> I understand the need for the academy, and i don't question that it has helped many people. However, why are they all in cali? There are some of us youngins here in Ohio. And some of us are poor. Is there a way to get one out here on this side of the mississippi? Am I just dumb and there is one i don't know about? Is there something similar in the area i haven't heard about? Please enlighten me. Thanks in advance.

->> Not to speak officially for Bert and crew, or anyone on the front lines of putting SSA or any SS.com workshop together, but they donate A TON of their time and resources (read: spending less time with their families because of this), all in the name of promoting our industry and making us all better photographers/businesspeople. I'll venture to say they don't make any money off of putting this together, and it comes together from the generosity of the organizers, sponsors, athletes, and organizations involved.

That said, you'd be hard pressed to find a workshop that gives you as much as they do for the price. Workshops aren't cheap, but this one is one of, if not THE best value for the money. If the Bert had to fly out all involved, then guaranteed the price of SSA would rise dramatically.

If not this year, then in the future, save up some cash and make it out to CALIFORNIA. The chance to learn from Bert will be worth it alone, not to mention the other teachers and faculty members.

I think these two threads will answer your questions. I'm from Puerto Rico, and I saved some money mostly for the airfare. After getting back from SSA III I have to say the experience was far better than what I was expecting, so it was worth all the hassle and money I had to put up in order to go.

->> I'm poor...I'm from Ohio/PA/NY...I'm a student...and I found a way to make it here. Worth every cent too. The instructors live here...the Big West Conference is here(which are the events we shoot)...plus, do YOU want to be taking photos in a couple feet of snow right now? I know I don't. I'm enjoying palm trees and 75 degree weather. Plus, NO SCHOOL! If you get the opportunity, make every effort to come to SSA.

->> There is another way. Keep the classes in California but add live access to some of the classroom sessions. I use Web services frequently and it allows me to include remote students, customers, even instructors, and they can participate right along with the other students over the Web. All they need is a phone, PC and if they have a camera, you can see them as well. For really large groups you can stream the audio but now questions and interactions are done through chat windows.

There are a number of providers and most allow students to view a streaming live video feed, see the presentations, participate in polls, ask questions, and even share their own applications or images from anywhere in the world.
An added benefit is giving subject matter experts the opportunity to present to a live classroom from a remote location.

The live classroom obviously offers a unique experience to socialize in and out of class, handle and clearly see any gear being demonstrated and of course going out and shooting events and later critiquing the results. I suppose remote students could arrange to shoot similar events from their location but that presents additional challenges. Still, just the opportunity to participate live in the classes, record the sessions and scale the opportunity around the world to both students and instructors is possible and affordable today.

->> Jordan Murph and I are at the Cal State Fullerton - UC Irvine men's basketball game as I write this...the final event on the SSA V sked.

We are helping Patric, Brent and Hannah makes some *very* nice action photographs here at Bren Events Center.

Sean Haffey, Crystal Chatham and I spent the afternoon at the Long Beach Invitational Softball Tournament watching SSA participants Joy, John and Brent make some KILLER action photographs...I think I saw more dives, collisions and upended players in 3 innings than the past 3 years of shooting MLB!

It's been a very cool 4 days.

Tomorrow is the final editing and critique session ...and the awards brunch.

Thanks to ALL 51 particiants, the great faculty and staff...it has been a blast!

Special thanks to Samy's Camera, Think Tank Photo and Canon USA for helping make this cool educational programs a reality.

We also received geneous support from AquaTech and Dyna-Lite.

SSA VI anyone?

->> SSAV has been great, there has been a variety of lighting classes lead by Myung, Donald, Matt and Michael. Sports of all kinds with instructors there to give you tips. The work has improved each day. Thanks to all of the sponsors, Canon, Think Tank, Aqua Tech and Samy's. Thanks to Kirk Baker of Camera Bits for taking time out to stop by and give us tips for Photo Mechanic. I leave here taking a tips from each and everyone of the instructors. So thanks to each of them for working with me. SSAV gave me the opportunity to cover sports I have never seen before like water polo and boxing. I apologize if I have forgotten anyone, a little sleep deprived by but ready to get back home and using all I have learned in my work. A huge thanks to Bert and Matt for all of the preplanning and organizing!!!
