D300 - MB Grip Problem - Fix

->> Greetings,
I spoke to NPS today, and am advised a problem with the MB-D10 Grip has been recognised. Apparently a small number of units have a pin that is slightly recessed, which causes the problem (When the grip is used with the D300 the battery indicator flashes, basically freezing the camera, until you turn the camera off and on again).
It's a quick fix by the Nikon technicians, not including the shipping time to send it to their repair centres.
Good news - problem reported, investigated, and a resolution determined in pretty quick time. I'll keep you posted on the results of the fix when I send it in on Monday. |

| ->> NPS currently have the camera and grip. I think there is a secondary issue with the mount and it's contacts. When I get the camera back I might post an update. |

| ->> NPS contacted me today - I'll pick the camera and grip up tomorrow. I'll possibly cover the Rip Curl Pro depending on surf conditions, and if not newspaper sport on Sunday with the rig. I'll update after I've given it a good run. |

I would like to know as well, mine will be going in shortly. Isn't it easier to post here instead of replying to numerous amount of emails I know I don't have the time for it. |

| ->> i sent mine in, but i found that the problem lied more with in the pair of the 70-200 VR and the d300, than it did with the grip. mine is with nikon now, i sent in the grip too, but i was able to get the camera to turn off like you are saying, with a power failure, even with out the battery grip. hope they figure this out soon. |

| ->> Michael that is more the problem I have, its with my 300mm and 70-200 with the D300 as it happens with or without the grip just hope it can be fixed this time as the battery grip has already been in another time for something else. |

->> Likewise--I had the same problem with my D200s, usually with my 70-200. I was hoping it would go away with the D300, but no such luck. And I don't even have the battery grip for the D300.
I'm convinced it is related to the connection between the lens and the body because it usually happens when I switch from vertical to horizontal, or even more from shooting down (e.g. from a balcony) to shooting more 'parallel to the sky.' Or maybe it has to do with the sensor that detects picture orientation?
The best advice I've seen/heard yet is 'clean your contacts.' Anybody have anything else to add?
Derrick? |

->> The problem and fix are listed in my original post. In relation to the grip, Nikon merely cleaned the contacts.
My camera had a secondary problem, which has now been fixed. Thank you all for your interest.
Apologies for any mis-understanding. If you have a problem with your camera, please contact your nearest Nikon rep - I'm certain they'll look after you, as they did me. |

->> i know flickr can be like a bad word sometimes. but here is a post on a d300 users group who also have the same power failure problem. they talk about a solution to the problem without having to send it in to nikon. if your interested, browse through the thread.

->> I heard from different photographers that the problem may be the lens mount causing the problem. The problem is also on the D3 as well. I'll keep you posted on what the problem maybe.

| ->> This link was found by ss members Bud. read this. Experiencing some problems with AF system in my D300 body. Have been trying to focus in poor light conditions with my camera AF set to ‘closest subject mode’. Through the center of what I was shooting there was a vertical line and d300 was not able to focus. What d300 did was to focus as near as it was possible and nothing else. Even after trying to press shutter button for several times did not make the lens to go through the whole range again. Nevertheless when I choose the AF point myself it focused with no problems. Then I tested AF points one by one, and I have found out that when pointed to the white wall only one point behaved quite strange, namely, was not trying to go through the whole range, but focused as near as possible and gave the sound as if it was trying to focus even closer. I blow my mirrors and AF with blower; I tested with 3 different lenses. |

| ->> I got the same probelm with a very new D300. Happened with the 70-200 and 17-55. So, Im assuming it's the body. Missed some killer shot ops today while turing the darn thing on and off... |

->> Michael, are you speaking of the Deoxit? , I have had my d300 in melville 2 times, the problem is still there. It is annoying, but not death defying. For now I will learn to live with it. I don't think cleaning the contacts is the issue, I really believe it has to do with the weight of the lens stressing the contacts and what happens, when you have a grip attached.
I had the exact same problem with the d200 and 70-200vr attached. I just turn it on and off, go on shooting.
Referring to what Derrick said about the pin on the grip being a different height, I just got my mb-d10 back from melville and one pin , on the right side is definitely lower. Why did nikon not fix this?
Nikon service is good, not perfect, they are being slammed, I am not defending them, they need to find out what causes this temporary failure. Michael Deoxit may be a temp. fix, but the problem will come back.
I hope someone at Nikon is reading some of these threads. There is an electrical contact problem, lets fix it guys. |
