A little over a week to go.... SSA V

->> I do not know about anyone else, but I am really looking forward to SSA V. I am just finishing up a book project on the geology of Mount St. Helens so I am really looking forward to shooting some sports, getting some great feedback and seeing what everyone else is shooting. The schedule looks full and has way too many great sports to tackle. The staff listing look great like normal and everyone is always so helpful and friendly. Now if time would just pass quicker I could get out of work and hope on the plane. I checked the weather and it looks like Sunny, Mostly Sunny, Mostly Clear, back to Sunny on the ten day forecast.... Hopefully it holds out....
See you in a little over a week..... |

| ->> Personally, I'm dreading it... sunny skies and temps above 70.... abombinable! I jest. No, this week can't go fast enough, as it will be a busy one. I finally got PM, so this week will consist of learning its features in and out, transferring my crashed external USB into a new enclosure when it comes, and finishing up all my class work before I leave. I have a 30 minute presentation to give right when I get back, so it has to be completely finished before the academy so I can focus all my attention on photography. Can't wait! |

->> School too is getting in the way. My two buddies, Brandon and Mike, get back Monday morning and I go directly from the airport to school for a presentation. Photography is so much more fun than business school.
I can hardly wait and am really looking forward to my under experience with Donald. SSA V will definitely be the highlight of my senior year!
See you all in 9 days! |

->> You guys must have it rough! I need this week to slow down a bit. Between State wrestling, State Swimming, Section basketball, oh, and that other part of the paper we call news, I am running crazy. Today (Monday) is really the only evening I will have off until I arrive in CA next Tuesday.
On a higher note, I just wrapped up a big project on one of the local high school dance teams and I am excited to get some feedback on it. I really hope someone tears into it like my college profs used to. I am in dire need of harsh feedback.
See you all soon.
Oh, I will get that project added to my member page ASAP. Take a look if you have a sec. |

So what kind of last minute things are people doing?
Tomorrow I am getting remote gear, finally.
Only about a week to go...

If any of you crazy students are planning to go to downtown LA and see the sights, be sure to visit Diddy Riese and get the ice cream sandwhich. Best $1.50 you could spend. |

->> Really looking forward to it. I haven't shot any sports for a while because my internship ended and I only shot one freelance job for them after that. Hope I'm not rusty for too long.
I still need a case to fit my lights and cords in if I plan on carrying them anywhere without looking like a christmas tree...
Might see what the camera stores in Phoenix and then Irvine/LA have to offer. Could just get a Pelican case but I don't really want to come back from this trip completely broke. |

->> I don't call this "THE coolest sports photography event of the year" for nothing!
This is the biggest Academy we have held to date. The best schedule of events to shoot we've ever had. And a fabulous faculty.
Thanks to Samy's Camera, Think Tank Photo and Canon USA for supporting this workshop.
Also thanks to Dyna-Lite and AquaTech for the loan of gear to be used by the participants during this workshop.
Hopefully we can continue holding this wonderful educational program in the future... |

| ->> SSA is amazing and as amazing as it will seem while you are actually there taking it all in, it is more amazing when you get home and realize how much you take home with you. Bert does have the most wonderful staff and incredible sponsors. Think Tank, Samy's, Aquatech and Canon are very generous to help sponsor what I believe to be a fantastic workshop that Bert has created with the help of Matt, Myung, Wally, Mike, Crystal and Jordan add in there Miralle and anyone else I missed and you have one of the most hands on experiences. For any first timers, don't stress the small stuff, come with a great attitude and you will take away more than you can imagine. |

Kirk Baker of CameraBits, the main code writer for Photo Mechanic, will be sitting in on our Early Bird class on digital work flow.
He will be there to offer up some tips and power-user short cuts ... and answer all of your questions about PhotoMechanic.

->> Did I hear someone say that a video of the Photo Mechanic session would be posted after the academy!?
Anyway, don't forget to pack sunblock and at least two pairs of sunglasses. At SSA 3 I lost my shades and had to stop at a CVS on the way to the horse track. There are few things worse than over-priced bad sunglasses.
Remember one thing: you're going to have a lot of stuff thrown at you, but don't expect to be spoon fed. The instructors are there to help and they do a fantastic job of it, but you must put in the effort and push yourself to think out of your comfort zone. Do that and you'll likely realize the true benefits of the academy 6 months or a year from now.
Oh, and don't get fixated on who has what gear - just make pictures with what you have and what's available to you through the kindness of CPS.
Back to my regularly scheduled 15 degree weather... I'm not bitter ... really. |

|

Joy Absalon, Photographer
 |
Clifton | VA | USA | Posted: 5:48 PM on 02.29.08 |
->> Jared:
You are allowed to take sunblock (or any liquid make-up, cosmetic, toothpaste, mothwash, etc....) as long as it is 3-ounces or LESS. No full-sezed tube with only 3-ounces left either. The actual package must be 3-ounces or less.
I was recently behind a woman at security arguing that her almost empty full-size tube of toothpaste was less than 3-ouces so she could take it. She lost as you can imagine.
Go to Target or another local drugstore and buy a couple of .99 trial sized sunscreens. Or buy the trial sized ones once you are in CA........ |

I'm sitting here with the temp hovering around 20 and a steady snow fall. There's supposed to be around six inches on the ground when I leave to cover wrestling tomorrow morning. |

->> A big SHOUT OUT to Angie Akers, Kim Moran - Blad and David Kim for helping us with SSA V!!!
Angie has agreed to put together our beach volleyball session and has gotten several of her AVP colleagues to help stage our annual "Sports Shooter Open":
Jenny Kropp - 2007 Rookie of the Year
Brooke Langston - 2007 AVP tour rookie
Angela Lewis - #9 team in 2007
Angie Akers - #7 team in 2007
David has "volunteered" a couple of his clients to be subjects for Donald Miralle's portrait lighting session, AVP players April Ross and Brad Keenan. April finished 2007 6th in the AVP standings and Brad finished 4th.
Thanks to all of the above for their help and support in putting on THE coolest sports photography event of the year!

Last year, shooting baseball in the low 60's was an experience, so this year the indoor evening events are looking good! But, part of the reason for attending SSA is to step out of my comfort zone, so this would really be taking it to heart! lol. |
