Photoshelter Performance Issues

->> I'm recently having performance issues with Photoshelter.
Upload speeds are down to 20kb/sec. (while FTP and all other file transfers to other sites blast with 120kb/sec or 500kb/sec. from the office). This has happended quite a few times since the beginning of 2008. Sometimes the archive wasn't accessible or the pictures didn't load completely. Clients not being able to see and download my work is a problem. They seem to pick those Photoshelter downtimes for viewing their files.
Anyone with similar issues? |

->> I haven't had any problems here in Brussels - maybe it is problem with your local ISP? Also, have you tried contacting their tech support team directly? They are very responsive.
Best of luck! |

->> I have not had any issues.
I have had a couple of clients in the last few days download hi-rez files for projects without any problems. |

| ->> No problems whatsoever here in Istanbul, or in any of my travels (I've been with PS since the beginning). I would suspect local ISP problems as well. |

->> What version of Photomechanic are you running? In 4.5.3, they fixed something to do with FTP performance:
"Long FTP queues no longer cause a slowdown."
Release notes here:

Maybe that's what you're seeing? So an update might fix it... |

| ->> I am experiencing upload issues as well. I was running version 4.4.3.3 of Photo Mechanic with upload speed of KB/sec .2-.6 range. I have just updated to PM version 4.5.3 and experiencing same transfer rate. I am thinking it may be a PhotoShelter issue since accessing my account and folders is much slower than usual. |

->> To clarify:
I do not use Photomechanic for uploading photos to Photoshelter. I use the PS Uploader.
I only tested my internet connection with an FTP transfer to see wether the lack of bandwidth is related to Photoshelter or my internet provider. Downloading and uploading to any other website plus FTPing files onto my Website all work at my maximum available bandwidth. Only Photoshelter is sometimes way slower (20kb/sec.). On other days, uploads to PS are as fast as my other file transfers (120kb/sec.).
I emailed the PS support. I'll post the outcome. |

->> Are you getting this result doing it from Germany? If you tried anything around 2 weeks ago, perhaps from Eastern Europe or the Middle East, you may have been influenced by the cable breaks they had in the Mediterranean. The Middle East, and I believe some parts of Eastern Europe as well, had interrupted internet for about 2 to 3 weeks around late-January into February. During this time, if I had 2k download speeds, I felt lucky!
If this is not the case, then I would suggest waiting for an answer from the PS folks. |

->> Try DLS reports, select either Los Angeles or San Fran and see how your speed is.

| ->> Photoshelter provided me with a link to connection speed test and the result was as I had expected it: Upload was around 120kb/sec., download around 1.200kb/sec. - only uploading files to PS is most likely to be within 20-60kb/sec.. That's roughly 50% of my available upload bandwidth. |

->> Bastian - you sure you haven't turned on bandwidth throttling at any point and now forgotten? Check the preferences of the uploader and make sure your throttle slider is in the off position
And while I don't want SportsShooter to be a PhotoShelter support line I just want to say that PhotoShelter is having no performance issues of any kind. We have nothing in play that will slow down the speed in which your files will transfer - files will go as quickly as the connection can handle.
That said we are at the mercy of the stability of the internet around the world. In the last few weeks time there been undersea internet cables cut, routing issues at the main internet hubs of the world (RoadRunner had a big outage last week) and even companies like Comcast who are battling BitTorrent type download/uploads by intentionally slowing connections which a mass upload of image files to PhotoShelter could certainly be getting caught up in. See Robert Seale's experience with uploading in general here.

Unfortunatetly there is no perfect way of diagnosing where in the chain things are having a hiccup - I can only speak for PhotoShelter in saying that there are no issues with our internet pipe, servers and there been no other complaints about upload performance.
I'll gladly discuss this with you offline if you wish as I don't want to clog the board with customer service issues related to PhotoShelter
Hope I was able to offer assistance.

->> Michael, bandwidth throttling is off. My upload speed is stable with all other file transfers but not with Photoshelter. For everything else (Mail, FTP, web uploads, etc. etc.) I have a stable rate of 120kb/sec. up-stream. With Photoshelter, my upload rates jumps up and down in minute long intervals. Lows are around 20kb/sec., average around 60kb/sec. and highs are 120kb/sec.
I talked to Meghan at PS and emailed her some screenshots.
I made this post not to bitch about Photoshelter - your service is very useful for my business. I just wanted to check if anybody has similar issues (and got them solved, so I might try the same route). |
