Mac Laptop Portability

->> I currently own a 12" Powerbook and need to get something faster/more powerful. The problem is that I spend a lot of time on the road doing traditional "backpacking" and need something small. I carry two soft backpacks and spend a lot of time on long, dusty bus rides where I often leave my computer to get banged around in the big bag under (or on top of) the bus, train, whatever. I have Jack Grubber's incredible case for it, and don't fear getting it banged around a bit (after also wrapping it in some clothes. ***You can call me crazy for this, but trust me, after over a year of time on the road, my computer is none worse for the wear!***

I really like 12" PB and am upset to see that Apple doesn't have something similar in their lineup. I need something full featured so the new Macbook Air is out. I'm torn between the Macbook (13") and the Macbook Pro (15.5"). My question is, has anyone made this switch who travels a lot? That 3.5 inches seems like a big difference! All features aside, how is the portability of the 15.5?

Cheers.

->> Neil,

FWIW, I had a 15" Ti Book before getting my 12" Al Book, and the 12" is a lot more portable, if you're just looking for a size comparison opinion.

I've also used my wife's 6 month old MacBook and it is WORLD's faster than my 12" Al book, so If I were in the market for a new portable I'd look at whether the 13.3" MacBook would meet your performance needs before springing for the extra $$ and size of the MacBook Pro.

->> I second the MacBook Pro 15.5. I had my 12" power book in the shop for 2 weeks. I used my husbands MacBook for editing during games and it's soooo much faster. The size really doesn't make a huge difference for me. I just stick it in the laptop bag and attach it to my rolling camera bag no extra room required.

Hope that helps.

->> I am in the same boat as well--I am on a 12" PB and I love the size, but need something new. I think i am going to for a 15" Macbook Pro since I cannot stand the glossy screen, and like a few of the additional features (I am going to wait for the next update though, should only be a few months). For my light weight travel (both backpacking and third world) i am going to strip down my 12" to just the bare minimums--PS, Photo Mechanic, Firefox, ect. and leave the hard drive free. I won't be as worried about it getting stolen, and if it breaks, I have another one at home. That is my plan for now, since the MB Air doesn't interest me either (I need a DVD drive for backups, and additional batteries to switch out for longer times w/o power).

->> I have both the Macbook pro 15" & macbook. My macbook pro stays at home, To big & battery life is the pits. I love the macbook so much I just ordered another one with the newer, faster chips. I agree The glossy screen isn't the best but I think Apple will be going over to them on all there computers, only because of the PC world. The macbook is a very capable machine for travel work & the battery is really good & the size i think works pretty good also. I have to say I use the macbook about 95% of the time & macbook pro 5% & only for pictures to be printed, Thats because it's hooked up to the 6 external drives.
just my thoughts.

->> Thanks for all the responses.

I didn't even think of getting a 15" MBP and keeping the Powerbook for travel. I suppose that might be a good solution. I don't think Powerbooks are selling for much money these days anywho.

John, I think we're on the same page. I have a friend that works in a Mac store who talked me into waiting for the next update...it should be sometime next month.

Thanks again everyone.
