| ->> Just curious does the D300 raw work in cs2, it seems I have read someplace that one must have CS3. Or does one just update the raw reader in CS2..thanks. |

| ->> If it doesn't work directly, you can convert the raw files to adobe's DNG and they'll work. (Had the same issue with canon 40D files) |

| ->> That is an idea, but am thinking in terms of clients..could just do that as well I guess...I have not bought the camera yet, likely wednesday. Have one I can get my hands on at a local shop. Just curious if I have too upgrade the photoshop as well, just adds extra expense to the purchase if this is so. Thanks for you quick response |

->> I just spoke with a friend whose D300 files don't work in CS2 without the DNG conversion. The conversion is time-consuming and you double your file space creating the DNG files, so it's a bit of a hassle.
I had to upgrade to CS3 because I encountered this problem with the 40D just as Mark did. A word of warning though... I bought the PhotoShop upgrade, but then couldn't install it because I owned the CS2 CreativeSuite. Apparently, if you own the CreativeSuite, you can only upgrade to the newest CreativeSuite, not an individual bit of software. Adobe doesn't warn you about this, and the refund process is a real pain, so make sure you're upgrading to the right piece of software.

->> Can you make a TIFF with Capture NX 1.3 and then open the TIFF with CS2?

| ->> If you have Lightroom, it will process D300 and D3 files. |

->> Just a few thoughts, while this does not answer your client question, it may help,
For the Yearbook and Newspaper way back when, we had D2x RAW files that were converted to DNG, then opened, etc..
I hated this.
It is a waste of time, can get confusing if you do not have a really good workflow in place, and we would find color/JPG preview issues when converted [esp. in PhotoMechanic]. Overall, it just took up a lot of time and was a hassle more than anything.
For me, CS3 has been great, I can batch process raw files faster than I could JPGs with some of the new options.
So consider how much time you are willing to be spending in front of the computer - is that time better spent being able to follow up new leads with clients? or just time with family and friends?... You may find the cost is really worth it.
Hope this helps,
Patrick |

->> Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..yeah, I knew I was in the right place, thanks alot guys..though it is not what I wanted to hear, but suspected it too be true, as with the D2x we went through the same thing, that the photoshop had to be upgraded..just wish Nikon could play nice. I refuse to buy their software, just out of principle more than anything, bastards should give it too us the prices we pay for the damned gear.
I did not know about the suite update..however I do not have the suite, only the photoshop, so I should be ok there. I do understand it is well worth the update and have just been putting it off for sometime now, so guess I will have to make the jump. Just hard to justify when the work is not flowing in.
As is buying the camera in the first place. But whatever.
Thanks again guys, appreciate the quick response. |

->> Tim,
Those bastards at Nikon do give you a free copy of Capture NX with the D300. But you better hurry, I don't know how long they were going to extend the offer.

Also note that if you're on a Mac, you'll need to have at least OSX10.4.6 in order to install the CS3 upgrade. |

->> I am on a Mac. thanks guys.."FREE' copy of NX..right...oh well, am still rolling over the whole buy now thing..some work coming in, so can justify it..D2x is getting tired and sticky...just wierd for me, first time ever I did not early adopt the top of the line version. Settling so to speak for what appears to be a pro-sumer version..just figure finally this version will be sufficient for my needs, and if it cannot stand up too my abuse, hell, can buy three of them for the price of the D3..Frankly, still pissed over the full frame thing..after years of being told from the top down that there was no way this was going to happen...Yeah, Whatever.
thanks again all for the replies.. |
