Flickr Member Copyright Infringement (theft)
Ian L. Sitren, Photographer

->> I just recently discovered a Flickr member with 193 of my photos posted on his account. These are photos that were only released to my editorial client for posting on their website.

What is amazing is that they are even posted with all of my IPTC and EXIF data, clearly showing my copyright, contact info etc.

I have just sent the appropriate notice to Yahoo as required and to my attorney. I thought people might be interested in how this plays out.

But just as a reminder, always enter your data on your photos, it resulted in clearly identifying them (although to me it was obvious and would have been easy to prove), and it made them Google searchable. Amazing!

As a side note, I still don't see a use for Flickr or what it is all about...?

Pretty blatant. Good luck with getting this shut down.

Any idea how he got the images?

Keep us up to date..

->> I've been repeatedly robbed on flickr for random blogs and myspace pages... I finally put an end to it when a graphic artist started using my images in his website. There are limitations you can set in your flickr account preferences that will block people from blogging. But unfortueatly like everywhere else you post your photos every genius that knows how to do a screen grab can take your work with or without your water mark. That being said I still put the bulk of my work on flickr and use the excuse that it's for my mom. But I can say that it has also gotten me calls from several editors who searched keywords and found my images.

->> I had flickr about a year ago, and I discovered my images on somebody's page. I sent an email and flickr deleted the person's account right away.

I also removed my account to stop it happening again.

->> The only place would the photos the photos are displayed are the galleries from one of the major bodybuilding editorial websites. They are a client and I shoot on assignment for them. But they are my copyright.

I do not have a Flickr account nor do I even really know what Flickr is.

->> Update:

Although it did stump the copyright people at Yahoo (Flickr) who needed the exact address of each image despite my copyright and all data clearly displayed; The photos have been removed. Although the account was not disabled and has numerous other very obviously stolen images on the offending member page.

I just want to emphasize the importance of saving your copyright info with your images.

->> I love Flickr... it's a great resource for many reasons.

In the Digital Age it will be inevitable that your image might be ganked.

Flickr isn't the problem... People are the problem.

I have to let my students know they will fail if they steal images from the web... They don't always listen... Welcome to the world we live in.

->> Not saying what he has done is right at all, I have caught people "borrow" my work from my old papers site in the past too, and it sucks.

He seems to be just completely ignorant of the copyright usage for these photos. Some of the images of other photographers still have the copyright info. on the photos themselves.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/nguoiviensuvn/525043842/
I think if he was truly looking to resell them or claim them as his own he would have photoshopped that out.

He's probably just collecting them because bodybuilding is his hobby. Regardless it's wrong. If an attorney will soon be contacting him I am sure it will give him a scare to never do it again and respect the copyright laws!

I think photographers need a Napster revolution too.
