I hope to attend again in March! |

Funny piece, but I would lose the "star" wipe. Gimmicks are gimmicks and it detracts.
Keep it up, 'though. |

->> Maybe my sense of humour needs an overhaul; referee asses? I'm a referee, and ready to laugh at myself anytime, but this wasn't even funny in any context. Rather pointless and stupid, as long as you are looking for opinions. I mean, if they were all flat as pancakes, that's funny. If they were wearing plumber's pants, that's funny. One ref patting another ref on the ass, that's funny. Someone point out to my very slow brain what was funny about this?
and he paid money to do this... now I AM disturbed!

->> I have to agree with phil on this one....I mean just because some special effects were put on a couple of photos the only one that made any sense or had any context to what we do was the pass play where the ref was in the way...we all can relate to that. but if you want to spend the game PURPOSELY shooting the ref's ass......hmmmmmmm.....and as phil mentioned you paid money for this? I guess maybe I've got better things to do with my time and money than shoot photos of ref ass. honestly, if you're going to do this as phil also mentioned try and make some of the photos at least interesting....and as a last note I would hope the sportsshooter powers that be are gritting their teeth right now after this statement
"I think I was supposed to post it to let all of you who missed this weekend know just exactly what you missed:"
does that mean everyone missed ref ass? I mean I try and MISS ref ass when I'm working.
huh? this is the kind of stuff you learned? yikes. we're all doomed. |

->> So, maybe I need to place some context here. I think for people who weren't at boot camp this past weekend, this may seem like an immature attempt to be funny. And yeah, it definitely is.
Here's what I felt we covered when learning the Apple programs
-Motion
-Star Iris
-Sound/music and linking photos/transitions to that
While I was shooting this football game (Which I actually have real shots from. Maybe I should post those already), I was trying to come up with some sort of story. Matt (Brown) suggested doing the people with the chains and/or the chains themselves. I had thought about it, but just couldn't think of a good way to execute it. I wanted a story that nobody else was doing. I struggled to come up with something creative, but I didn't want to leave without being able to produce some sort of presentation, combining still and sound.
Bryan (Crowe) mentioned having plenty of "ref ass" shots this game. So, I got the idea to present my knowledge with the programs while possibly getting a laugh or two. I just didn't want to present the same boring football action slideshow that I knew most people were going to end up feeling pressured to do.
Is this professional? No. Is it good? No. It's awful, tacky, and immature. But I know this. I knew this while I was making it. It's part of what I considered the fun. It's different. So I succeeded in what I wanted. They didn't give me that monopod cover for nothing. ;-)
But I really don't want to be known as the "Ref Ass" guy. I joke, but I consider myself an extremely hard working individual and am striving to become an educated photojournalist. So if you want to see a more serious piece I did with Conner Jay: http://www.tiny.cc/CFmBt
Thanks for all the kind words everyone! |

->> Not everyone went into Saturday's game with a project in mind. For those of us that attended Jarod's effort brought a needed laugh after two days of information overload. We all had a good laugh at the end of a long day. Maybe it is an inside joke, maybe we were tired.... Maybe you do need an overhaul on you sense of humor. I do not know, but ease up guys it was 90 seconds of fun. My effort is in the number 9 slot on my member page http://www.sportsshooter.com/members.html?id=1183 |

->> thanks for the explanation jarod. i was really struggling to work out why your film was so popular and well received... i put it down to being something to do with american football that i didn't understand.
now i see that it was meant to be irreverent, light hearted and fun... i never trust people who can't lighten up and laugh at themselves, and your film shows not only that you can, but gives everyone who watches it a chance to as well.
well done! |

->> Jarod, it's definitely an inside-joke kinda thing. The context you provided is great. I had the privilege to witness a bit more context and I'd like to share.
When we were eating lunch after learning all kinds of effects with Final Cut Pro, we were joking that the "star effect" would come in handy for so many uses; knowing full well that in journalism, it wouldn't see the light of day. When we saw the star effect, I nearly peed my pants!!!!!
We all wanted Jarod to post this video on You Tube, but Jarod hesitated at first. He said he didn't want to be known as the Ref A$$ guy. Jarod I don't think you have anything to worry about.
Again, great job Jarod. Maybe it's one of those things where, "You had to be there," to think it was funny. |

->> I showed it to some non-photographer friends of mine and they got a kick out of it as well.
I remember Jarod being a little worried about showing this multimedia piece at boot camp because he wasn't sure people would appreciate the tongue-in-cheek nature of it after busting their asses to produce quality pieces.
I think maybe we take ourselves a little too seriously sometimes and presentations like this are a nice reminder of that. |

Good work Jared and Kudos to the whole class of SportsShooter Boot Camp... All of you worked hard and put together some very cool projects considering the amount of time you had to learn Final Cut Pro... Best of luck to all of the participants...

Eugene... |

->> that's the problem with inside jokes....sometimes those on the outside don't get it. we can all agree on that right? it has nothing to do with a lack of humor, taking life too seriously or all of that...jarod's explanation was terrific....props for that....but no one should hammer those of us who didn't get the "inside" joke. |

And Yes, Jody, I am jealous I wasn't on it. I have the flattest ass in officiating, and it WOULD have been funny!!

->> Phil, you must be a torn man being both an official and a photographer. Do you often find your own ass getting in the way of your photos? What a paradox!
It seems like there always seemed to be one or two football games a year where my lens would become a ref ass magnet. And don't even get me started on basketball games, where I apparently had a "referee parking only" hat on.
Funny stuff Jarod. |

->> I'm a former basketball official who's worked D-I on down the line to rec ball. Some of the photographer's used to tell me all the time about booty shots and I used to laugh until I was on the other side of the lens. The thing is, the officials are trying to do the same thing as we are assigned to do. Do their job. If an official started trying to pay more attention to us getting our shots, he wouldn't work many ball games in the future. I was at the Hampton - Tulane basketball game the other night held at the Comcast Center on the campus of the University of Maryland and a ref got in the way of an awesome ally-oop. I had to look around his leg just to see it because I knew it was about to happen. Did I get mad? No, because it happens all the time. Was I dissapointed? Yes, because I missed a poster shot. But, I will get more chances to get the play right just like the ref has to do.
Think about it. If 17,000 screaming fans are yelling at me, the band is pumping, the crazies are going nuts and Gary Williams is in my ear all game. You think I'm worried about a photographer trying to get a picture? My motto was when I used to ref and still is, when you see the shot. Take it.... You can't be slow on the trigger or you won't be assigned many games either, so it works both ways. Those who wait for that perfect moment will always get that Ref's A$$.......
With that said, as a former official I loved the piece Jarod put together and I'm ashamed that he had to explain himself. It was thought out well and put together GREAT!!! I sent the link to all my budies who still ref and some of them worked last year's NCAA Tournament and the ACC Tournament too and they got a kick out of it. |
