| ->> Hi, I recently was at a highschool football game with all my equipment around my neck, I was holding my 1D with my 430 ex mounted to it, and let go of the camera thinking it was also around my neck, but turns out it wasnt and it went crashing to the ground. Long story short, I busted a couple chunks of plastic off of the hot shoe part, I was curious if anyone has had this before and if there is any replacement parts I could buy to fix it up. |

->> The foot itself is a cheap part and pretty easy to replace. I broke one off a 580ex and have replaced one on a 420ex as well.
I've got a link to the how to somewhere, will post when I find it. |

->> This is a link to how to fix it for a 580ex. The fix for the 420ex was virtually identical.

If I recall correctly the part is about $5. |

I sent him a suggestion which is included at the bottom of the series of images that makes reassembly considerably easier (at least with my personal experience.)
One other note. You can buy the entire lower assembly for around $30 (at least on the 580ex.) You can replace that in about 3 minutes if you have a small phillips in your gear bag. After my experience, I bought a couple of the feet, a couple of the locking rings and the entire lower assembly to keep as spares. Figured it was cheap insurance. |

| ->> Hey, that's worth filing away for "when" this happens, and I agree that it's probably a good idea to have around, just in case. Thanks! |

->> I had a 540 EZ break twice on the hot shoe. Cost me $40 at Central Camera in Chicago each time.
Best thing about the new 580 EX II is Canon made the hot shoe metal. Can't believe it to them that long to think of that. |

->> I have the flashzebra mod. They basically send you the entire lower end of the 580ex with the miniphone jack. That will include the shoe. It's quite a bit more than just replacing the shoe, but if you have a need for the jack and don't like soldering it's not a bad deal.
Only bad thing about it is the jack is in the lower unit and at a downward angle. It gets a little tight with certain mountings. You basically need to remember to plug the cord in first. |
