->> Needed to share after feeling pretty dumb.... :-)

Well if it says it in Photo Mechanic I'm sure it is true... I decided to take a look at the actuations on one of my camera bodies... So, I took an image from my last job and set the variables in PM to show the Actuations count...
It read 1,010,147

I at first couldn't read and thought it said I had one hundred thousand, one hundred and forty seven actuations...

Slowly, I realized I couldn't read and it actually said I had a MILLON PLUS actuations... I was a little shocked. My index finger is feeling pretty good for pushing the button that many times in only 6 months.

So, still in shock I check a few more images and they all fit with that #.
So, I checked the job prior to my last one.... They read around 33,000 actuations... I felt better...

But, I still couldn't figure out what was up...
Did somebody borrow my camera body while I wasn't looking?.... Did someone switch my camera body with one that is well beyond what Canon says they should shoot, that happen to look and feel identical to mine?

No... I did figure it out...
Do you want to know how blatantly obvious it was............
My back up is a 20d. I shot a little with it over the weekend on my last job...

Apparently either my 20D has the miracle shutter that never goes out or PM doesn't read the actuations very well for the 20D

Either way.... I guess I can't read.... I was actually shocked

Walt

->> Usually you can guess to what order of magnitude (power of 10) your camera's shutter has fired. So, does it feel like a million? I mean I don't think I could put on more than 1,000 a day on a single body, so if I went all out on one body for six months, I'd still be less than 200K.

No, more likely PM isn't reading the actuations correctly. PM wouldn't be the first program I've seen read actuations incorrectly, I've seen other programs either severely low-ball it (a camera with 50,000 being displayed as 200) or severely high-ball it (a cameras with 10,000 being displayed as 600,000).

->> My 1D bodies have 1,000,000 frames each. They have both have had multiple shutter replacements. One has had two shutters the other I think has had 3 shutter replacements.

Chances are your 20D has not shot 1,000,000 cycles without having blown a few shutters.

->> Wait, 1mil frames in 6 months?

I have had m bodies since early 2003 and they have shot countless pro football and baseball games, heavily covered political campaign season, been to the middle east a few times, done a bunch of NCAA basketball games and 40+ weddings since early 2003 and the bodies average 1.3mil frame clicks.

Something seems a tad off on your frame count for the 20D body.

->> The actual bytes in an image storing the number of actuations tend to move around from camera to camera and vendor to vendor, because that part of the image EXIF is not standardized. As a result, as each camera comes out, it's a crapshoot whether an app will be able to correctly display the count until the software is updated.

If Canon or Nikon or whoever made the camera kept the old byte-offset from the start of the block, and they kept the same order of most-significant and least-significant bytes, then the software should get it right. If they didn't then the number reported by the software can vary wildly.

->> Ok... I get that some of you have taken this seriously... However... I know that my 20D only has about 30,000 or so shots on it. Both of my MKII'S have about 35,000 or so... I also know that PM doesn't read the 20D accuations very well and will on many ocasions give you the wrong data...

I just thought it was funny that I actually got worried that my so called new mkII of 6 months ago was actually not new... I didn't relize I was looking at an image taken by my 20D... I just didn't read enough of the info... It gave me a scare, and all because I didn't read far enough down the exif data... Oh well..
Thanks to all of you who responded
