Shutter life database

->> In trying to determine whether 125,000 is "moderate" use for a D2h I'm selling, I came across this database. I couldn't find any prior reference to it in SS.com, so here it is: "http://www.olegkikin.com/shutterlife/sitemap.php." Interesting info. (How do I create an actual link?)

->> Yes it is interesting but I wonder about some of the numbers.

On the site's 30D page, for instance, it says:
"Average number of actuations after which shutter is still alive: 170,689.5"

and
"Average number of actuations after which shutter died: 1,100,054.6"

However, I'm not sure how the users are determining how many clicks their 30Ds have actually had. It's impossible to tell on the Canon prosumer cameras, unlike the 1D Series. Plus, two users reported 7 and 8 million clicks which obviously skewed the average.

I'm guessing if the site calculated means instead of averages, the final results would be more useful. Still, looking at the individual reports (disregarding the obvious fakes) is quite useful.

->> Curtis,

The mean is the same as the average. I think you "mean" the median - the point at which 50% of the population is higher and 50% is lower.

->> On the 30D page, several people have indicated that their shutters have died after an unusually low number of actuations. This database is probably flawed because it is not a pure random sample.

It is very possible that many submitters are people whose shutters have died abnormally and they stumbled across this database while looking for answers.

If your camera is working fine, you probably won’t look for this site and therefore contribute information.
